I have a Pugalier... and for the record, he is a fantastic dog who has ZERO health problems. Our vet, a wonderful man with over 30 years experience, constantly compliments us on how excellent our boy is. We originally wanted a purebred pug, but looked into the crossbreeds (Sorry, I mean "designer") because we were worried about a pure pug's health problems - breathing etc. Both my dogs are so called "designer" dogs (pugalier and malt x shih) and I wouldn't trade them for the world - they're both in perfect health and were bred by a responsible registered breeder.
When I was a kid, we got a purebred Tibetan Terrier and I'll never forget what the breeder said to us - the puppy we were getting was completely "useless" and "worthless". It had show winning parents .... but because our pup we got had a BROWN nose instead of a BLACK nose, she was essentially a waste of space. They actually tried to talk us out of buying her because, according to them, she was so completely useless. We bought her anyway and you know what? She was a wonderful, loving, loyal companion to our family for 14 years before she passed away. I shudder to think what would have happened to her had we not bought her.
I really like this forum and have learnt a lot from it, but I'm starting to feel like I'm a horrible person for having two seemingly frowned upon breeds.
Our vet too, when checking out our 16 1/2 y.o. ACD/kelpie, is constantly telling us of less health problems with mixed breeds and i would tend to take his word for it than the self professed experts around here, given his 30+ year career.
you must hit it harder then!!
The people who have chosen to take offence to comments made here need a teaspoon of concrete IMO. No one ever said anything bad about YOUR dogs. It is the people who breed these dogs that the issue is with. Perhaps those who make a conscious decision to buy a x breed without researching so called hybrid vigour are just as bad - but that s a value judgement that needs to be made by ppl individually - as is everything.
Goodies girl has two x breds aside from her GSD Mia - now I have plans to steal Jack - who is most definitely a x bred. I think the people that bred him are A grade toss bags, but I think he is a lovely dog. I wonder how many of his litter ended up in pounds or used for breeding. I wonder that about pure breds to - esp with people who don't vet their prospective buyers properly.
There is a great possibility Rufus the doofus has some husky in him - perhaps a second cousin once removed - however - will I love him less? Hell no - is he desexed - hell yes - because breeding him would serve NO purpose in the betterment of any breed. Sure - it might produce some nice pet pups - but those pups already exist and die every day in shelters.
This has become a circular argument. People can't see past their own noses into the big wide world. They can't recognise that their actions have ongoing actions and reactions beyond them. We are all responsible for what is happening in our shelters - what have you done about it lately? Me - I adopted Rufus and signed off from rescue - 10 years was enough - I will just foster from here on in - atm cats - then perhaps a dog...who knows.
