Sadly, it is permitted by the canine councils to sell registered pedigree, with papers or without to petshops.

The recommended and or legal age of puppies up for sale differs from state to state. I can't recall now if Tas is 6 or 8 weeks. In NSW, pet shops can not sell puppies under the age of 8 weeks.

At one time it was against the code of ethics of the VCA (then KCC) for a registered breeder to sell puppies to a pet shop. Sadly when all states came under the banner of the ANKC a lot of ethics went out the window.

I honestly don't know how we are going to stop the sale of live animals in pet shops. I was still at school when I first joined a group lobbying against the sale of live animals in shops and markets and that was way back in 1968/69. According to a book on the history of the Lort Smith Animal Hospital (thanks again for that one Occy) animal welfare groups were trying to stop the practice back in the 1920's. We haven't got very far after nearly 90 years have we?

There is really not very much we can do as individuals. Personally I will never buy so much as a dog biscuit or a cat toy from any shop that sells live animals. I travel a bit further to a pet store that only deals in food and animal products.

Ask one of the teenage girls who work in the pet shops what happens to the animals they don't sell and they will always tell you they find homes for every single one. Yeah...sure. And Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny have just dropped in for a cup of coffee.

What a relief! Good old Tassie :P
I shall be able to rescue a dog then Well, I'll go out and have a look around first, obviously. The website doesn't have many dogs or cats listed, but maybe they don't have time to keep their site updated?
I've got months till I'll be adopting anyway.

I went back to the pet shop, and the 4 week old puppies had disappeared...

I wish more could be done to ban petshops selling live stock.

Thats why we got our dog at the pet shop I knew she had been there for weeks (told us she was 11 weeks but she was closer to 14) and they were needing to make 'other arrangements' for her.

The teenage girl probably wouldn't be told what happens. She would probably be told that if they aren't sold there, they will be moved to another pet shop - where they might have more luck.
