Not all "family breeders" are backyard breeders after your money BUT they have most likely only bred their two dogs for "the experience" rather than bettering the breed.
If you want to check if they are serious about breeding, ask them what all the blood tests showed regarding possible health issues later. If they can't show you the results, best look the other way.

I'd stick with Mitte who has been part of this site for quite a while. He will point you in the right direction.

    Hi
I know from personal experience that private breeders may well be 'nice' people but they are not by any means necessarily knowledgable about what they are doing or responsible if things go wrong.
I have a friend who was breeding her two like that and sadly she was very ignorant of issues that pertained to the bitches health in particular and overbred her.
There have been some heart rending stories on this forum from people who have bought a puppy and had serious health issues and the 'breeder' was not remotely interested if contactable at all. Just be very very careful.

For $2000 I would be wanting the pup to come from a registered breeder with documented history and all the relevant health tests on the pups parents and evidence of testing of other generations. I would want them raised and socialised in a home environment and from a breeder not pumping out large numbers of puppies.

An ANKC Border collie I bought a few years back was raised in the home with her litter and the breeders family. The breeder gave me copies of the certificates that cleared her parents of all the genetic eye diseases that collies can carry, plus clear of carrying a terrible condition called TNS plus hip and elbow scores of 2 past generations and the pup cost $750.

Good luck, certainly doing your homework now and not rushing in will hopefully pay off.

Maybe send your email address to Mitte to write to...

    no character limit there.

(was it Winston Churchill who said "I didn't have time to write a short letter so I wrote a long one")

Alright, so an update on what's going on. I have emailed and put my name down on the waiting list for most of the registered breeders from dogs NSW, and hopefully one will contact me soon (thank you "mitte" for the advice and answers to my questions).
For the main time I'm just doing my research on all aspects of the puppy, and things a puppy owner should do etc. Also been shopping around for puppy items such as their bed, brush etc

Now, I have a question, I've been looking at the flea/tick and worm prevention products and there seems to be many different brands out there. So which brand has everyone been using? (especially js puppy owners) - I've read a bit and people seems to recommend comfortis, and some others seem to recommend Frontline or Advantix (though there are mixed opinion). What about Revolution? Some seem to recommend it, and it also takes care of flea/tick and also worms.

Also I've read that puppies should be fed premium puppy food, but again there are just way too many brands out there I've been looking at the Avance brand, what do you guys think of it if you've had experience using it? What other brands would you recommend?

    Cheers
