Default Our little angel is not an angel anymore!

    Hi,
We posted in another thread about our new German Shepherd puppy and we're just posting an update here, plus some problems we've come across.

Firstly, we just LOVE our new little terror! (Also known affectionately as psycho and fruitloop!)
Unfortunately though, we are still having a little trouble with toilet training. She won't go in the lounge room or the bedroom but she'll still go anywhere in the rest of the house. Male M had to clean up three runny poops this afternoon because he got complacent about letting her run around and he wasn't very happy.

She also whines and yelps when we leave her alone in either the lounge or the bedroom. When we don't give in, which is all the time, she eventually stops, but it's seems so unnecessary when we're still obviously in the house and talking to her. We'd like her to stop this.

Finally she nips or chews everything when she gets excited; which is a lot of the time because she's very excitable. She nips our feet when we're walking, our hands when we pat her or play with her and a variety of other things that cross her path. Saying "NO" in a firm voice doesn't work and neither does whimpering like a fellow puppy. How can we positively train a dog not to do something? We stick a chew toy in her mouth at every possibility but she soon finds something else she'd like to chew on or nip better. Male M almost got his left ear pierced for free!. He wasn't happy about that, either.

We will get her into obedience school as soon as possible. At this rate February next year is the earliest because a lot won't train in the hot weather over Christmas. I'd like to get a private trainer but can't find anyone near Ballarat/Ararat/Stawell region.

Apart from that she has a beautiful nature and a lovely spirit and spending time with her makes us very happy!

welcome to the world of a puppy,

with the toilet training, you need to be persistant..... take the pup to the same spot every few hours, after play, after a nap after eating etc..... its not the puppys fault it had an accident in the house, its yours......

the nipping goes away with time, i found with my pup screaming and carrying on like an absolute idiot worked... that and when he did it i pushed my hand further into his mouth to make him push it out......though im sure others disagree with this method.....

enjoy it though, its all part of the fun of a pup

We're relieved to hear the nipping goes away eventually; but your suggestion on how to discourage it is worth trying, we think.
    Thank you.

Can you make a trip down to Geelong? I can give you a kick start training session and written training regime until you can start dog school. Working breeds are my specialty and I have 4 working Malinois Home - InLine K9. I have my own school grounds too so if you can make it on a Sunday morning we can get together and I can let you learn some things from my trained dogs as well if pup needs a rest Conversely we can try and make a time that I can drive up if thats more convenient and we can make a morning of it.

As for the biting, scruff the pup and time out. And the toilet training, she should not have free reign in the house until she is toilet trained - so crate or leash. If you can't keep an eye you cannot stop the behavior so the best way is to block access and take her out frequently.
