Red face Puppy Eating Cat Mess

    Hi,
our puppy has started sneaking over to the kitty litter and eating the cat's mess out of it. Is this harmful for her? We don't want to have to keep the kitty litter out of her reach if we can avoid it, but we will if it's going to harm her. Any thoughts?

Many dogs love the taste of cat poo, horse poo, chook poo etc. In small doses it's probably not going to do any harm so long as you don't mind the smell of cat-poo breath when your pup gives you kisses.

Watch for the cat using it's tray and immediately afterwards put something foul tasting on the poo. Hot sauce, one of the special products designed to stop dogs chewing or whatever. After puppy has had a taste and hopefully backed away in disgust remove the poo as the cat might not like the smell and may not use it's tray next time. Then you will have another problem on your hands.

With a bit of vigilance on your part it shouldn't be long before your pup decides cat poo is something to be avoided.

    Good luck.

Candy did this....I have an enclosed litter tray but it had no door...so I got one for it...Candy stuck her head in and the flap door didn't let her pull her head back out...it got stuck on her collar so I had to help her...she hasn't been back in there since...hehehe!!!....Maybe try that

I tried that, but one of our cats REFUSES to use it! He ends up going on the floor beside the tray!! I was all out of ideas before this thread came along!

jarrah does this and she knows she is not allowed so like a sneaky child she waits untill no one is paying attention. I hear her nails on the tiles however and I just have to say uh uh and she comes out with her head down and tail slightly wagging. LOL

I sort of learnt that little trick by trial and error. It worked for all my dogs except one. The one exception was current Pug Arwen's grandmother Brigit. Brigit loved cats and cat poo with a passion. The cats loved and trusted her. Brigit bypassed the hot sauce I was using by following a cat to the litter tray and actually catching the poo as it came out. I could never break her of the habit but at least the cats had nice clean bums.

Yep! My girls favourite treat, as well as bunny poo
It's taken a while....but a lound agro NO! makes them stop and look all innocent
as well as spraying water at them with a spray bottle, but we don't have cats- so it's a bit easier for me.... We get next door neighbours cats poo.

Ziggy's favourite is possum poo.... Luckily they don't come to our backyard anymore, Ziggy was like a hoover. I guess I can call myself lucky that she is not into cat or dog poo...
