Thread: Party games

    Default Party games

We're having a bit of a shindig Friday night and I want to have some party games prepared.

Not everyone is drinking so I need some games to keep the sober ones entertained while the drunkards make idiots out of themselves

I'm doing one game of pass the parcel but with a twist, instead of just passing it in a circle each layer of paper has instructions like "Person with the brightest colored underwear", Person who has kissed the most people" silly things like that as an icebreaker.

    I need more ideas

Something that amused a few people on the radio the other day was merging song titles or TV shows with suburb names... Eg Home and Away became "Hove and Away" after a beachside suburb here...

I like the ones where a character name is on a card and you stick that in a band on your forehead and then play twenty questions. Am I male? Am I ficticious? Am I a cartoon? Am I a cartoon animal? Am I a warner bros cartoon animal...

Hahaha well this is true XD Thanks Hyac, I'll add yours to my list for sure!
I have a bunch of card games like Kings for the drinkers but the ones not drinking can't really play unless they sip red cordial instead

There is also the make up a story or letter to an absent friend... ie each person contributes a line... or a word... the written ones are bizarre... because you can fold up the page so nobody can see all of the story at once.

and there is guess who is in the photo game... if you can get everyone to bring a photo - either of themselves as small children or babies or of their parents or grand parents... Me as a baby got picked by an office team fairly easily but the one of my parents - nobody got right. It didn't help they looked like the creepy couple in front of the church from Rocky Horror - though that might have given it away based on my name... but nobody figured out.

There's a word game where everybody picks a topic... eg you can have dog breeds and I can have rock bands post 1980 or between 1980 and 1990... someone else can have English town names, and someone else can have GM car models... etc... and you toss a coin or roll dice or use a scrabble set to randomly choose a letter of the alphabet and everyone has to write down a something starting with that letter in every topic. eg Letter D
    Doberman,
    Duran Duran
    Denali (GMC - no kidding)
    Daffodil
    Dugong
    Dufish

Etc, and people who nominate something in the topic that nobody else gets - ie its valid (agreed) and unique get extra points (not sure how many). Especially if nobody else can think of anything in that topic starting with that letter at all. Helps if the topics are not too limited.

And ideally you play at least one round per topic or player. And I guess you can use google or just a majority vote to accept or reject a selection/guess/nominated topic thing

And then there is spoons - it's a bit like musical chairs with cards. It can get a bit savage though.

everyone gets four cards (I think), and everyone passes on one card, and picks up one that is passed to them. And when anyone has a matching set of four - eg four jacks - they grab a spoon. As soon as the first person - who has the matched cards - grabs a spoon, everybody can grab a spoon... there is one less spoon than players each round... so the person who is spoonless is out (but can stay to help verifiy nobody is cheating, or help them cheat which ever. Sneaky thing to do in this one - when you have a spoon is to keep passing cards...

And then there is the card game called "cheat"... the idea is to get rid of all your cards. I've seen it played a couple of different ways. You have one or more decks of cards - depenidng how many people are playing... and you have to put some cards down on the discard pile and declare what you're putting. eg 1 jack, or 3 kings etc. And you can be challenged. If what you put is what you said, the challenger has to pick up the discard pile, and if you cheated and you're caught, you have to pick up the discard pile.

There's two ways of playing. Method one - everybody puts out 2's until someone challenges, then everyone puts out 3's... method 2 - the first person puts out 2s, the next person puts out 3's, the next person puts out 4's (whether they have any or not) etc. Each method has different strategies.

You're full of good ideas Hyac! Thanks! The only ones I have heard of are the card games. The story, the word game and spoons are being added to the list!

Spoons is not fun with competitive people with long nails so you might have to glove some contestants... Though the frenzy that happens when the majority go for their spoon is very funny.

You could probably make a guessing game out of everyone writing a fact about themselves that is fairly unique but not obvious who it belongs to... and then everyone one else having to guess who belongs to what fact. Eg "once got 112% in a maths test" or "told a teacher not to pick her nose in public". "did a project on global warming in 1975". "once ate 14 lamb forequarter chops in one sitting and followed that up with 3 kitchener buns (cream buns)".

    etc

Hmm just thought of variation of above...

each person write their fav party trick on card and if rest of party guess who is what trick - they get to see it done. Eg imitating bird calls, politicians, blowing up rubber gloves with nose... etc.
