Ok ok, I love animals, especially horses, I own a throughbred, my horse was trained and bred for racing, has his papers, everything but for some reason, never got on the track.
I work at a vet, all for animal welfare and health.
And yes, the jumping is very dangerous, incredibly sad, BUT, these horses are the horses that wern't good enough for racing.
This is their second chance, most horses that are bred and trained to race, but arnt good enough, are put down.
So a lot more horses will die as a result, more humainly yes, but more all the less.
Im sort of on the fence about it, but you need to know that more horses will be put down if they cant jump.
In that link you posted, they state horses dont like to jump.
Does that mean X country jumping should be banned? Show jumping should be banned?
Horses in the wild, wouldnt chose to be ridden in the first place.
They are not forced too, trust me, if a horse doesnt wanna do something, they wont do it.

To me..it's the simple fact these horses run flat strap over jumps ,kicked and whipped to go faster...they fall over the jumps because they cant get their stride right...break their legs/neck get shot and it's all for gambling/$$

If it was for fun/competition without the gambling attached...with safety like cross country & show jumping..then it's a different story.

Yeah I agree with that, they are going way to fast over the jumps and its not being done safely at all and it doesnt seem right that the horses have so much pressure on them to win via the gambling. I completely agree with that. I dont think it needs to be banned completely, but they need to safe it up, like any other form of horse riding.

Yeah im on the fence as well, what i think is cruel is when trainers dont give the horse enough transition training between flat racing and jumps and thats when problems occur. Horse are built for running and jumping and if done properly with the right training the sport would be safe.

You have to remember that if these horse didnt go into jump racing they would most likely get put down, so its giving them another chance.

    I agree...

All horse sports will end up being damaging to the horse but IMO it's the sports that are are all for profit that are disgusting. Racing on the flat and jumps racing puts enormous strain on the horse's body. And why would you put a mere baby's body (talking about when they start) under such pressure if not for money? No animal can safely run at break-neck speed and clear jumps without the risk of injury. Yes if it was banned the horses would have to be rehomed (or sent to the knacker - this happens all the time anyway so I don't think they can use this excuse!) but that's not a good enough excuse to continue!

I do think that (most?) people in the racing industry would care about the horses, BUT on the whole they can't really care about the animals - it's only because they're in the business they don't see how cruel it really is (does that make sense?). It's just a fact of life for them - try telling that to the horses that break their necks and legs!!

The owners of these horses pay a hell of a lot of money to keep them happy and healthy. They are treated very very well.
They are not abused and do become loved.
Expensive feeds, chiropractors, rugs, and all the basics for a horse, worming, hooves, teeth.
My only concern, is the way it is ridden.
I have absolutely no concern on how well looked after they are.
And basicly, in the racing industry, why spend money on a horse if its not making you any?
You cant sell an off the track thoroughbred very easily, my last horse was an OTTB, and she was so hard to handle. She was impossible to keep a healthy weight, and you would have to canter her round for about 45 minutes before she calmed down enough to do anything productive.
