    Default Why This Forum?

    Is it just my perception, or does this forum attract more than the average number of spammers, scammers and others?

    I feel like (as I jokingly said in another report to the Mods) that I am the forum's guard dog. I am not sure I want to but I feel obliged to report the spammers, free advertisers and scammers.

    Where's my moral compass.....Silvershadow (serious question), do you think I am wrong on this one? (the one in General)

    You brought up a relevant point the other day about it putting the forum in a bad light. Should I let these types post and not report then? I am not sure of how many people are aware of this, but these days, it seems I am reporting at least 1 spammer or scammer a day. What attracts them to this forum? How do they even find it?

    A pessimist sees the glass as half empty;
    An optimist sees the glass as half full;
    A realist just finishes the damn thing and refills it.

    I do agree that it seems this one seems like a magnet.

    Another I am on has very few as with donations the site admin has bought some modifications to deal with it. It is pretty rare now that one gets through and the 3 admin are good at zapping them.

    It doesn't account for human idiots though. I think this forum comes up near the top when googling dog forums.

    I don't think this is the only site that gets trolls and scammers, although it does tend to get a lot for really no reason =/ One of the reptile forums I frequent gets many trolls, but that site has so many more moderators then this one and most of them are picked up very quickly. Perhaps this forum gets so many trolls because it's so small compared to other forums. Maybe they think it's an easier target with less users. They might think we haven't got moderators or maybe they don't come on frequently.

    No, I think you should report them. There's nothing wrong with that even if they are legitimate (although dumb) people in need of help with their dog. At least then Pug and Aussiemyf (if she's watching still haha) can watch the thread and user and determine if they're an actual troll or not.

    I report any obvious ones, escorts, selling a product but I do like to give the benefit of a doubt to some...Not all.

    When I first came here I had a pregnant bitch that I had taken on. Mentioned that my father in law at times breeds, every 9 years or so to replenish his dogs and the rest go to great working homes.I could have been taken as a troll.

    The vast majority of people see nothing wrong with oodles, designer dogs, puppies in pet shops. I think we have to be very careful in educating members not denigrating them.

    It is a slow ripple effect process but it is the best that we can do short of wanting to slap some people's head between 2 bricks.

    It's like graffiti - if you can clean it off before anyone notices it or responds to it - it takes the joy out of it for the troll. Spammers don't care about response in the forum - but the faster you can clean that stuff off the better. Google indexing is getting very fast these days and they get what they want if it stays up for half a day.

    So the bottom line here is that too many of us reward the trolls by responding - ideally in an outraged fashion. And we don't have enough mods to get 24hr clean up fast enough.

    It might help if there was some sort of graphic when signing up or posting or people had to make a few posts in the intro section before they were allowed anywhere else but the bottom line is moderators. This site needs more.

    PS Puggerup - if you could clone into about 6 people - I think that would cover it. Ie you do a great job but you're not being paid enough (anything) to be here 24/7. I did see Morgan post - excellent but rare.

    There is a never ending flow of scammers spammers and trolls.
    Most public forums are like that.

    Anne, Hyacinth was the forum guard dog for a while there.. sending me reports sometimes 5 times in a day. Like everyone though, it gets old after a while

    It does need to be kept up with though.
