    Unhappy Advice Sought? Vet Nursing

Hi all, i guess this post is a bit of a vent but i would love some advice...

I am turning 22 this year. I did a 3 yr degree in marketing and have been working in the advertising department of a large fast moving consumer goods company for about 2 years. My day to day work is much the same of an admin assistant..in other words I'm the girl that does all the tasks that everyone else hates doing. I have been deeply unhappy in this role for the past 6ish months, to the point of me coming home in tears most afternoons. My OH thinks I'm depressed and has no idea what to do or what to say to me when i am in this state and I'm worried that this is putting a strain on our relationship. Whilst i get along with most that i work with, they are all a lot older than me and i really feel like the odd one out. I have lost most of my friends since leaving school, so he is all i really have..I feel like this job is poison but I'm too scared to quit without having another full time job to go to..

I wouldn't say i enjoyed my degree, i just had no idea what to do when i left school and was pushed towards uni. I have been looking for another marketing or events job for a little while but no luck as yet. I think i could be happy in the same career but at a different company...it just doesnt seem to be happening for me.

So....I have started thinking lately that maybe i should just make a complete career change. I always wanted to be a vet growing up and the only times i am truly happy these days is when I'm home cuddling my pets. I'm not prepared to do a 5 yr uni degree to become a vet but i have been considering doing a qual in vet nursing. If there are any vet nurses out there i would love to hear a little more about your job and if you're happy? How easy is it finding work? etc.

Vet Nursing is crap money. You will earn triple the amount in marketing to what you will earn Vet Nursing.

Sure, money might not make you happy but as you gather more responsibilites in life such as children, mortgages or you want to travel or just enjoy life, earning a pittance is not a good option.

Also, you must also remember that you have to start somewhere. Starting at the bottom in vet nursing often means you are nothing more than a glorified kennel hand. Cleaning kennels and cages all day, washing bedding, feeding animals, cleaning and sterilising equipment, plus serving clients and answering phones is not glamorous. In larger hospitals and speciality centres you will be able to undertake mor etraining and the job may be more interesting.

Like a career in marketing, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up.

I also work in a marketing field. I began in the creative arts and events, moved through to sponsorship and promotions, then marketing and promotions and now just promotions. I started at a relatively basic level and was able to advance my career at a rapid pace. Within 10 years, I had more than doubled my initial income.

I love my job. It is busy, fast paced and has wonderful opportunities aligned with it.

Thanks for the advice Anne. Whilst the money isn't really important to me now, i guess you're right in the fact that it will be later on in life. I have no problem doing the menial jobs but i just feel like there is absolutely no chance of moving up the ladder in my current job, yet it's so hard finding a new job because i only have a year and a bits worth of experience, and everyone wants experience in events and actual marketing activities, not answering phone calls and invoicing as i currently do..i just really hope something changes soon

Is there any chance of you talking with a superior and asking them if you can be offered the opportunity for more involved tasks? Let them know you are keen to increase your skills and vary your work load.

I always upskill my staff. If you are never given the opportunity to increase your skills, your career stagnates.

I have spoken to my boss on 2 separate occasions now and we have both agreed that he needs to find more for me to do. Unfortunately nothing has happened. My boss tends to sweep everything under the rug, takes a lot of time off work and all my co workers seem just as unhappy. Too be honest, i just think it's just this particular job that is putting me off the industry.

I'm sure I replied to this last night?? Anyway, the post seems to have not uploaded.

I think perhaps it is time to move on then. Keep a look out for new positions while you are still there. Scan the papers, register for online websites like CareerOne and similar.

There are quite a few out there in your field.

    Exclamation Dont do it

I'm a vet nurse. About to quit. Worse - job - ever.

You will earn more working at McDonalds or cleaning toilets.
You will spend all day covered in blood, urine, vomit, and fur.
Chemical and radiation exposure - your health plummets.
    Extremely high stress.
    Long long long days.
Vets treat you like rubbish and constantly throw tantrums.
Say goodbye to any good looks you may have...
And prepare to be bitten and scratched.
You will never get to sit down.
You will clean pretty much all day every day....

    =)

Been doing it for 10 years. Thought it would get better...it doesn't.
