    Default Planking

Given that we heard reports of serious injury and death, what do you think of planking? Is it the fault of social media or is it a matter of individual responsibility?

Here's a planker I came across on FB. What an idiot hey...

A realist just finishes the damn thing and refills it.

That photo cracks me up LOL

Planking is so random and funny. Sure accidents happen when people are drunk.. my nephew got drunk and fell of a balcony a couple of years ago and broke his arm.. he wasn't planking.

i plank, I planked on the tv... well not on the tv but it looks like it, I have my ways

I think its just a matter of using your brains. Planking itself isnt dangerous, its where you plank and whether you use your head. Planking on the 7th story rail is stupid and an accident waiting to happen, drunk or not.

I think I remember reading once that planking started with a guy on holidays who wanted to do something a little different for his photos (I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure thats how it started)

In that context I think it's a great idea. But there's always a couple of drunken idiots who wreck it for evenone else.

Planking is really old LOL..........They used to do it in the old magic shows. Nothing is new
Also the yoga people have done it "forever", muscle control and such. Just don't do it in a dangerous spot

    LOL great photo.

I had a huge rant about planking on Facebook and that was before I heard about the first death.
3 of my friends posted photos of their friends 'planking' on the same day. One of them was over a nearly 5m high overpass.

A lot of people were doing it because it was funny, there were a couple of pictures balancing on the back of couches etc, they were fine, but the dangerous ones were just the result of plain stupidity.

Since it was featured on the news because the man died falling from the balcony the photos have increased 10 fold.
Now more people know what it is, more people will try it and come up with more "exciting" ways to do it to get a photo.

There's a bridge here that a lot of school kids jump off for fun.
It is treated as a suicide attempt.

I think planking is such a stupid concept. I don't see it as funny at all, rather just an example of how backwards we can go sometimes >.>

That's a awesome photo though xD

    Boring as bat****.

I cant see any point in it at all.

If I wanted thrills when I was younger I would get out my surfboard and go find some good solid pumping swell and get drilled into the reef along with some truly awesome rides, or do some absailing. Base jumping would also be classified as extreme excitement, but planking? I would have died of boredom if planking was all I had to give me a thrill.

I think its quite funny to be honest.

I certainly dont think planking in and of itself is dangerous.

However, as with anything, a bit of commonsense wouldnt go amiss eh. I mean really, its pretty silly to plank whilst drunk on a 7 story balcony, or to plank on the back of a fast moving vehicle. tragic these accidents have happened, but they easily could have been avoided with some thought.

Commonsense and thought is often not high on the list of priorities when you are young and risk taking. Planking in safe places would be boring. I think that is the whole deal especially for young risk taking males. Certainly when I was surfing, it was sooo boring to stick to nice safe waves. Who didnt like to open ones motorbike up to full throttle when on a nice big open country road, despite the thought of the odd stray kangaroo' or taking a big jump on a horse. It is often more about the adrenalin rush than the potential consequence. I can understand it although I can thing of better ways to get an adrenalin rush than planking.
