    Default Stud Name Idea?

    Hi all

So we will being starting up a horse stud in 2011, breeding Welsh Cobs and possibly Andalusians... so we need a stud name! We don't want it to be in either Welsh or Spanish, since we will be doing two breeds and some crosses, and we don't want it to just be gibberish. So here is some background...
We came from New Zealand, from a place in the South Island called Glenorchy. Mum wants to call it 'Glenorchy Meadows' but BLEH, yuck. I don't want to do it in another language, but I want it to have some meaning to us. So what do you reckon our stud should be called?

I want to have 'park' or 'lodge' or something on like that on the end of it, and I want it to be memorable..

Oh gees. You post on forums how your family can not afford vet care, that friends loaned money one time lately to be able to do it so how on earth are they going to be able to buy quality horses and have them vet cared for when needed?

For a start you will need a name to get a brand.

Also horses are way more experisive than dogs.. I hope they will be looking after.

Also what will the horse be breed for? Eg racing, showjumping and on.

I reccomend going & visiting as many studs as possible & ask the hard questions about monthly costs of vet care & feed alone.
I have breed horses all my life as has generation of my family, we have NEVER made any money as vet care, fee, transport & competing costs are huge.
I am not against poeple starting stud I just think you need to do alot of reserch first.
Also established studs are closing down due to being unable to sell enough young stock to keep going. The horse market is in a real slump at the moment & I'd advise even the very exsperainced to cut down on the amount of foals breed over the next couple of years as the market is flooded with stud closures, drought, flood & fire sales.
The welsh cob market is a little stronger than some but I can direct you to nurmous stud website that still have some of last years yearlings & all of this years foals for sale at much reduced rates.
If your serous you'd need to import new bloodlines so your stud can offer something different to all the others out there & do you have any idea the cost of an import.
Will you need to pay for training or are you honestly exsperainced enough to be breaking your own foals to halter, trim, rug etc & your own 2/3 year olds to saddle.
Both breeds you have chossen are very slow maturing & really should not be under saddle till 3 & sometimes even 4 for the Andies.
Can you afford to keep them that long?
I am in no way having a go at you & would say the same things to anyone who posted this thread as I see the fail outs daily at the moment with the eccomy & climate the way it is.
I just ask you think VERY VERY hard about this.

    I'll second that choice.

OK, That's 2 for that name, so problem solved. Glenorchy Park it is.

    Now, any other requests?

PS: Glenorchy Meadows sounds like a loony farm

    It dose.
I joked my next horse prefix would be Bank Lane, lol.............
you should look up some old welsh geltic names............
I really like cobs & when I have enough money to afford to breed for real again I would have Gypsy Cobs & Welsh Cob sec C & mainly sec D's.
This year my foals consist of a meltalic Buckskin colt(already sold) by an old Cutta's Could/Murrumbo breed Pally QH Stallion. He's nearly 30 so I am praying the same pairing will give me a bucky filly to 1 day in the future breed on with.
And I have a shettland in the oven(bit of a late foal) & that's it as I only breed what was really I had to to keep my choosen bloodlines going.
Hay is such a hassel this season also(& I even bail my own) due to so many lucern & different hay paddocks getting rained on whilst the hay was sitting on the groud waiting to dry. Others have lost the lot to floods. What we have is not great & abit water damaged but I am grateful after hearing of others hay problems.

    I like Glenorchy Park too.

I also think that the OP has asked for a stud name, not a commentary from other members about their financial situation.

It does come into play when it has been posted that pets have died due to lack of finances to get vet care, asking advice and not acting on it as parents do not see the need.

This is in no way an attack on Brittany. She is a teen who of course has to live by parental decisions.

    Conflicting stories on different forums.
