Default Eek! Need Advice on a New Laptop!

My laptop is dying, I've just spent the last 2 hours trying to get it to work, and tonight will be saving all my files to a portable hard drive. In my panic I also broke the "Enter" button grrrrr.

So, I have to face the fact that I need to look at a new laptop, lucky I have am having a good month with doggy boarders.

I don't get any junk mail here (they don't deliver this far out), so I can't go through brochures to see if anyone had any good deals out there.

I don't need a super duper one, just something for basic things like internet, emails, photos etc.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced laptop (read that as cheap!) and where I can buy it. I am in a huge panic at the moment!

In the meantime I will nurse this one along (I've had it about 3 years, it was reconditioned when I bought it), the ex told me late last year that it needed a new hard drive etc, so I can't see the point in spending hundreds on fixing this one when I can get a new one?

Umm well, I kinda don't really have a budget, I can't really afford one, but I guess I'll have to look at around $500? The cheaper the better!

GAG look at catch of the day and ZAZZ. Each of these sites put out 1 item per day and you may be lucky to get a pc

Or again, have a look at Grays on Line....heading to grays right now to look for you.....I will get Simon to check the specs for you if I find something

    Hey GAG..
If you find something you think is a bargain, check with Static Ice for the best price.. Search using the brand and model number..

Also check Ebay , Catch of the day from 12pm and also ZAZZ after midnight..

Try to avoid netbooks as they are usually quite limited not only in size, but also in processing grunt with many only good for browsing the net..

Most people will agree that Toshiba is the brand of choice in the current crop of lappys. But there are many brands that are quite reasonable out there.

I LOVE Dell! Have never had a problem with them! I got a Dell laptop at Uni as part of a scholarship and it was amazing! Lasted me 3 years.

Then when I was teaching with Education Queensland I had a Dell Laptop and all our classroom computers were Dell too.

I had a Compaq Presario before that and it was absolute rubbish!

Then I got an Acer. Hate it! But can't afford a new one yet! The next computer we get will be a desktop though.

I think sometimes its luck of the draw with these things.

Thanks everyone, lappy is still running yay...for now! I'm have to go into Sydney today, so will drop by some stores to get brochures and see what's available. Will also sit down tonight and see where I am at $$$-wise. Bugger, it's an expense I could SO do without, but this thing won't last much longer. Managed to save all my photos etc, thank DoG!

I shall be back on later (I hope) with some possible choices, and to catch up on other threads!
