    Default Internet Censorship

What do you know about it?
What do you think about what you know?

I am doing some research for uni and was wondering how people felt about censorship.

I have been fighting against internet racism and hate groups on Facebook and am actually taking them to Federal court.

Here's the thing.. where is the line between "freedom of speech" which is big in the USA and defamation? If people can't express their hate for black people by lying about them, posting photos of black babies with torn faces, and depicting an entire race of people as loser alcoholic no hopers, what will happen? Why is it necessary to be allowed to do that and not be censored?

They do it because they can and it hurts people and they are arses. it's as simple as that. Cencorship can be seen as peace keeping. People need to realise that not every thought has to be put out there because some of the stuff people think should be kept to themselves.

On the other hand, if we are censorship is biased and prevents people from making changes for the better.. like another pearler of Facebook, where they remove pictures of breastfeeding babies because of nudity and obscenity, then how can advocates of normalizing breastfeeding for the well being of society get their points across? How can they make a change for the better if they are shut up?

So as usual, 2 sides of the coin. If narrow minded nasty toxic people weren't around, then there wouldn't be a need for censorship in the first place.

The universe and it's actors suck. usually..98% of the time, life is crap.

I don't know anything about it.
Who will be making the rules for it ?
    Who will police it ?
    Will it be enforceable ?
There's a lot of stuff out there I don't want to see or hear, but does that give me the right to say no one else should want to know these things.

I disagree strongly with the current internet filter proposal [not sure if this is what you're talking about, or censorship in general]. I don't think the government should be able to regulate people in such a blanket manner. Chief problems for me are:
    - the banned list is hidden, a member of the public will not be allowed to see it. This stinks of slippery slope to me; at the moment say a neo nazi site is blocked, then a communist one is blocked, until any site criticising the government is blocked.
    - limited appeal process if your site is blocked, new sites could be added all the time
In the recent trial they had, a school canteen website was blocked because it had 'teen' in the name.
This is aside from the technical challenges; it's anticipated that if there was one blocked photo on say facebook the whole filter could collapse because the traffic to facebook is so high.

In general, as emma said there's lots of stuff I don't want to see, that doesn't I should be able to stop other people. I can't think of many historical cases when censorship has been a good thing.

In terms of the racist sites you're talking about pugger, there are already hate crime laws in most countries. Site owners should of course be held liable for site content. Just as is the case with child p0rn, etc.

I actually did an assignment on this very subject last year.. when I get time, if I can find it, I'll post some of it.. but my conclusion was pretty much the same as Tina.. although mine was focused more on internet porn.

I thought that we should have freedom of information, if we don't want to look at things, we don't and we supervise our children when they are using the internet.
We don't want to end up like China! But maybe that is what Chairman Rudd wants us to be like!
