Thread: Laptop Screens

    Default Laptop Screens

    Anyone know anything about computers?

My Laptop screen has died, I have got it connected to an old desktop one mum and dad had, but i cant keep it like this forever!

Is it worth getting it fixed, or just go looking for a new computer? This time round I am going to prob go with a desk top, and maybe later on get a cheap lappy. not 100% sure yet!

If your lappy is more than a couple of years old it's probably not worth fixing, however I'd still phone a couple of shops to get a rough idea, you never know.

They have a 320GB Compaq Presario in their latest brochure for $546, I thought it looked pretty good for the price.

If you're not travelling with it, just plug in an external LCD screen, they can be had for around $150 or less these days and nice big ones too.

    Otherwise - new lap top.

I refuse to support compaq pressario anything - they're impossible. Too much proprietary software that can't be fixed or upgraded when the operating system dies.

Mum just got a Toshiba A500 - I was unhappy with the shop she chose and I think she should have beaten them down on price a lot more than she did. With those - you will get zero after sales support from the sort of people that get to sell them eg Harvey Norman and **** Smith, although you get some support if something breaks. It only took 6 months to get the toshiba she had before repaired - cos between us and toshiba we picked an idiot for repairs.

If you want good after sales support - find a small shop that is not part of a chain but has been open a long time and find out what they have.

If you don't care - there's Dell, and Toshiba and Compaq (but they're hard to fix).

If you get windows 7, make sure you have a cd/dvd burner and 4 dvds I think it takes - and the first thing you do after you get it - is make the recovery disks. Because they don't come separate with windows 7.

If you have your own copy of MS Office and you want to put that on your new laptop with windows 7 - get the shop to remove any trial versions of MS office. It will take them approximately 3 days - which is why you don't want to do it. The trial version of MS office - prevents any other copy from being installed. I don't know why - it just does and it is really difficult to uninstall.

From the shops with support - ASUS is good brand. ACER is assembled locally (in Oz) but a bit random as to whether you get a good one or the Friday arvo laptop.

This is the spec I wrote for the latest laptop shopping venture.
    weight < 3kg
4GB Ram - you need this to run windows 7 - I don't care what Microsoft says.
    15" LCD screen
    DVD/CD burner
    wireless LAN 802.11 whatever

    Windows 7

    price around 1.5K

4GB ram tends to take the price over 1K. I think most of them come with hard drives that are big enough for anyone but a movie editor/downloader. And those guys have their own systems with terrabytes of hard disk available.

I'd like to have the "solid state" hard drive but they're currently hard to get most places and still quite expensive. Some places will let you option them. Ie it's an added extra. Solid state hard drives have no moving parts and are very fast access - boot ups are very fast.

I hate laptops ever since my last one.
2 motherboard replacements, 3 new chargers, 2 new cords and 2 light replacements in the screen all in 2 years! It was an HP too, so its not like it was bad quality.

    Sorry, no advice.
