My 2c worth, if the cat is already social then it does have an owner who will probably be looking at first call will be the pound. I HAVE wild caught a kitten from a friend's feral barn litter. Spitball, lethal, humans wounded without thick long gloves on is not overstating.

Maybe ring the pound and ask them what they want you to do.

Any posts made under the name of Di_dee1 one can be used by anyone as I do not give a rats.

Just read through the last few pages, and see that others also have an issue with how to deal with a stray animal.

I guess I am very lucky, as if it was me I would have no problem keeping the animal here (with the shelter's blessing) while they tried to find the original owner, if one existed. Maybe it's different in bigger cities and other places.

What I was trying to point out though with my reference of comparing this situation to Zen's situation, is that the rules should stay the same. Would I do what Pugger has done, and keep the kitty? Yep, I would, but only because I can. But I would go through every avenue first to ensure the kitty was a true stray and didn't have an owner somewhere.

Some animals are in bad condition, some are covered with fleas, some are obviously not cared for to the degree that we ourselves would care for them. But who are we to make that choice? I believe I look after my animals extremely well, but there are some ppl who maybe feel they would do a better job. Does that give them the right? Hell no.

Putting up notices, contacting the vets in her town etc, keeping in contact with the local shelter along the way are great things to do, Pugger, and as I stated to Zen - newspapers Many ppl who have lost an animal will look in the found section or place a lost ad in time.

Also, a fact is that not all cats wander from home for days on end. I have a cat, and always have. I know many ppl with cats, and if any of those cats went missing for a couple of hours I know the owners would be out there searching, as would I.

I hope the kitty finds her original owner IF she had one, and if not, you have a gorgeous cat, Pugger.

Fleas live in the wild - if this kitten has been out in the elements for a few days it is very likely they picked up fleas. Fleas are not an excuse to break the law

I didn't think I had broken the law. I took her to the vet to check for a chip and the vet asked if I will be keeping her. I said yes, so she micro chipped her in my name and said if anyone phones looking for a lost kitten that age and type etc she will pass on my details.

I just put up an ad in petfinder.com.au and tried phoning our local shelter but the number kept going to an old lady who had no idea what I was on about.

grrrr I am not a thief. I thought I was doing the right thing

pugger, I don't think you are a thief, you ARE trying to do the right thing. Call your local pound tomorrow and ask for advice as to what to do. If they want to you bring her in, then so be it, I detest taking in strays too, sadly my pound don't allow you to keep them in home-detention, but I figure it's better they go through the required time and then you can get them back. Although now she's chipped in your name, I suspect they would classify you as the legal owner. Talk to them anyway, I find most pound staff are pretty helpful. And they'd have a record of anyone reporting a missing kitten.

I wonder how the cat rescue people work then. The person from DOL who runs it locally to me said she would take the cat to the vet and get her chipped desexxed etc and I can foster her until she sells. No mention of the pound or tracking previous owners.. I am confused about that.

I think a lot depends on the area you are in, what state etc - I wish they'd just standardise it nationally so that there would be no confusion.

What person in their right mind picks up a kitten and takes it in to be chipped in their name?

It IS stealing - pure and simple. Perhaps no one is looking for the kitten or perhaps some kid has lost their birthday present.

I don't get it - none of you would condone doing this with a dog, so why is it ok with a cat - or a rabbit or a bird - or any animal?

It isn't finders keepers - possession is not 9/10ths of the law
