Animal rights group sets up shop in Australia

    Friday, 29/01/2010

Animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, will set up an office in Australia this year.

The organisation is currently looking for campaign and media staff, to brief celebrities and manage Australian animal rights campaigns.

On its target list is live exports, caged eggs, fur, sow stalls, and more campaigns against mulesing.

PETA's Jason Baker says the organisation will pressure Australian industry and companies, but doesn't rule out targeting individual farmers.

"When we write to a company, they know if they don't listen to PETA they're probably in for bigger troubles," he says.

"That's why most companies do sit down with us and do talk to us."

"They see we have all our facts organised about the animals and welfare side of things."

A spokesman for the National Farmers Federation says it has no interest in fuelling PETA's campaign, and says PETA can do what ever it likes.

The NFF declined the offer of an interview.

They believe people shouldn't own animals as pets because it's cruel.

They also kill most of the animals they take into custody. They're like BYB, they are fake and only in it for the money.

OK... why is it cruel to give dogs, cats, etc. a loving home, with a stable diet and all those other things that pets would get?
A bit hypocritical, the killing thing

i hate them cos they wanna stop mulesing lambs... Mulesing lambs stop them from getting fly blown... but they reckons that a sheep getting its ass eaten by flies is so much better for them then them getting mulesed...

Also wanting to ban live export to but i wont get into that

Brilliant. We really are turning into America. The next thing we need is a bunch of know it all morons telling us that crating our dogs is cruel, giving them the best home available is cruel, providing them with food, water and shelter is cruel, treating any medical conditions is cruel because they believe that if the animal isn't 'free' in the wild it's cruel.

Oh, another little gem... Rescued birds being rehabilitated should be left to die where they are instead of nursed back to health...

    Here are their adoption figures:

Year Received† Adopted Killed Transferred % Killed % Adopted
    2005 2,145 146 1,946 69 90.7 6.8
    2004 2,640 361 2,278 1 86.3 13.7
    2003 2,224 312 1,911 1 85.9 14.0
    2002 2,680 382 2,298 2 85.7 14.3
    2001 2,685 703 1,944 14 72.4 26.2
    2000 2,684 624 2,029 28 75.6 23.2
    1999 1,805 386 1,328 91 73.6 21.4
    1998 943 133 685 125 72.6 14.1
    Total 17,806 3,047 14,419 331 80.1 17.1

These were the HEALTHY animals that they have taken in or had surrendered to them.
