They believe in the return to nature of all animals, that people should not have any say over their future. If they had their way all domesticated animals would become extinct.

I think there is some dangerous and powerful people behind them.

They have a lot of celebrity backing in the states.

I remember when Pink weighed in on mulesing sheep issue and then had to eat her words when it was explained to her why it's necessary.

I didn't think PETA ran animal shelters - so where do those numbers come from.

Interestingly RSCPA likes barn raised hens better than free range hens because they think that the free range ones get chased by foxes and that is cruel... As if living wild is humane - PETA are always full of extremists.

I do wish one of these groups would do something about "grain fed beef" though. Have you ever seen a beef feed lot? They stink and the poor beasts are up to their knees in their own crap. And that's also where Mad Cow comes from. Any time a restaurant offers me "grain fed beef" because it's more tender, I ask for FREE RANGE beef and I'll take my chances with chewy. Tender / Chewy has more to do with how stressed the animal is before they kill it - so improving conditions at the abbatoir will help more than changing the feed.

They run shelters in America. These numbers are for the shelter in Norfolk, Virginia alone. They don't advertise the animals and they have no visiting hours advertised anywhere. They don't make any effort what-so-ever to find new homes, expecting people to just automatically come to them.

Links for you to news articles and those numbers:

This is where I got those numbers:

    Ingrid Newkirk - PETA's Shame

Other links for anyone who wants them:

PETA Kills More Animals Than Ever - Wellsphere

ETA: Even when people do approach them to adopt animals it is very rare that they actually release any to a new home.

I don't think PETA is about supporting pets, I think they think we shouldn't have any. Not sure how they plan to unevolve domestic animals but looks like the kill all shelters might be part of the plan. Nasty.

If I wanted more for animals to live in the wild, I'd be organising to buy up habitat and I'd be distributing free birth control in places that clearly have too many humans.
