Red face Get Your Thinking Caps On! I Need Some Help!

After reading all the great ideas for GSD's planned takeover of the world with her yummy doggy training treats I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring for some feedback.

I've been doing dog minding for about 5 years, have a loyal gang of regulars, but desperately need MORE! Plus late last year I have ventured into Grooming which is slow to say the least (I know it takes time, my best friend is a groomer and it took her ages to build up the biz).

Anyway, I've just spent all night fiddling around with a free website about my dog minding business and would love some feedback, what do you like, what don't you like, what else would you like to know that isn't there etc.

Most of my biz has been word of mouth (thank dog for my lovely clients), but I'd like to get a lot more new ones. I've approached a few pet supplies places but they aren't interested which is disappointing. How can I get my cards/posters into places where they don't know me? Such as shops, vets, etc.

Linky to my website (very much a work in progress) is

In My Home Dog Minding | Kisses and cuddles are free! (crikey I hope the link works!)

Any and all feedback is appreciated - I will continue to harass you until I get some!

Another idea for you GAG is to have a MySpace page with your business, and then do friend requests to those who are in the general region. There was a dog sitting business that did that in Newcastle. Not sure how much business they have got out of it, but might be worth a try.

    Hi GAG,

I had a look at your site and I must admit I wish I lived closer to take advantage of the service you offer. I think your site is well set out, easy to read and navigate and very informative. I enjoyed reading about your dogs as I would want to know who my dogs were spending their time with. I like the fact that my dogs would be able to come in and out as they pleased and that all dogs have to be desexed.

As to getting your name out there, I would ask the local schools if you could put an ad in the newsletter, approach any holiday places near you that if you add their link could they add yours and if you could leave a flyer up in reception. When you approach the vets and other dog related places take references from your current customers so that they know they are backing a good thing. Get to know the local Dog Walking businesses and again offer to put their link if they will put yours on their site. Ask if they can hand out your card and you will do the same for them. (Obviously this wouldn't work with the dog walkers who are also groomers). Again with the local puppy schools, offer to do the link and business card if they will. Set up a pamphlet and do a letter box drop and get your friends to do one in their suburbs as well, speak to the rescues around you and offer the same service of the link and spreading the word about them, maybe offer the rescue pups a reduced rate for clipping - you never know you might get some business through them as well.

I hope this takes off for you!

Some great suggetions there! Keep em coming!

I am in a weird kind of situation where I am 40kms from anything "local", even then all my clients live about 100kms awaym hence the pick up/drop off service. I was thinking about calling those regulars that have become more friends than clients and asking which vet they use, would they write a recommendation, then approach that vet.

Puppy schools are a great idea! Hadn't thought of that one!

Anything else you'd like to see me offer?

You need to put up there you are insured and have a police back ground check if people would like to see it.

    It looks good otherwise.

In terms of web stuff, Google as many business like/same/similar to yours, see what "grabs" you & incorporate into yours.

Really have a think about what makes you THE BEST on the planet & don't be shy about promoting that.

Get an advertising banner on dog forums. I've got one on that "other" forum & it pays for itself. I hardly post on there now because here is "home" to me, but new people still learn about my site because the banner flashes up all the time.

Get the link under your sig on here NOW. Every time you post, your web site address is there for the "just curious" to click on.

Start talking ... to everyone ... all the time. If you don't ask, you don't get ....

Think of some "kick off" or "join up" promotion. Think about what you're busiest times will be ... think about why (where is the business likely to come from) & there's your immediate target audience.

That's all I've got just off the top of my head. Get in touch with "Angela's Gone Batty" NOW just in case she doesn't pop on this thread & read it. She's been fantastic at brain storming with me & she has a marketing friend who's giving my biz the "go over". They may offer to do the same for you.

Get yourself linked on as many sites as you can. Thanks for putting mine on BTW. Can you please speak with me off line about getting your link on mine. I also want to know how you got that pic working. Looks brilliant. I only have the text address & as "luck" would have it, one of my links sent me a pic the other day & for the life of me, I couldn't work out how to do it.

And most of all .... be PASSIONATE & people will just pick up on your "vibe" & carry you to greatness !!

Go Greys !! Fly to the moon, the stars .... infinity & beyond .... and be all that you can be !!!

I dont advertise on DOL or anywhere, not too many people from my town would ever go there, so I do most of mine with Word Of Mouth, I have spent money putting things inthe paper, but when it comes down to it, word of mouth have given me more work than anything else!
