It's when the Australia was claimed under the Commonwealth because of Terra Nullius Terra nullius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and the original owners of the land (for the past 40,000 years) were killed, raped, torn apart, forced into missions and reserves, their children stolen, their languages outlawed, their rights taken away.

ETA- basically in 1788 on Jan 26th was when the first British settlers arrived in Australia.

This is a horrific part of our history, in saying that I would much rather celebrate a day to be Australian than dwell on the horrors dealt out in the past. I personally think that the best thing we can do on this day is celebrate what it is to be Australian in this day and age, not 222 years ago.

I admit there are days where I cannot stand this country. I see no reason why any of the citizens of this country should be unable to speak English, and I do believe that speaking English should be a requirement of being a permanent resident here and for those visiting here on a work visa. I also see no reason for us to constantly bend over backwards and allow those of other nationalities tell us how to live our lives in our country.

Please don't think that I am racist for a moment. As far as I am concerned I believe that everyone should embrace their heritage. I myself speak both French and Spanish in honor of my heritage, but I also speak and type clear, concise English. Why should we have no standards? Before moving permanently to France you must speak French, and the same is true of many countries.
