    Looks like a common black house spider to me. they make webs with funnels in them. Funnelwebs, I thought made funnel shaped webs in holes in the ground under leaf litter - like trap door spiders.

    I've got those black house spiders living in my car. And my clothes line. And I used to have them all round my front door (freaked out the landlady) in my old place. They come out when it's really hot and try to air cool. Sparrows eat them and take their web for nesting. So do quite a few other birds. So air cooling is pretty dangerous for a spider but when it's this hot the sparrows are pretty quiet.

    It is very very unlikely to bite you unless you try to squish it with your hand. If it does, it is very very unlikely to make you sick unless you're allergic. Which is also unlikely. I've lived with them everywhere and never been bitten by one.

    Pugger, just grab a jar, and pop the jar over spider. Coaxe the lid underneath it, and release spider into garden.

    My OH just picks them up and places them down somewhere else. But then again, he'd probably do the same if it was the most poisionous spider in the world! Lol.

    What an uneducated, backward opinion. I cant believe people still have that attitude..... Anyway, its a Black House Spider, you dont get aboreal FW in VIC... Kill it if you must but it wont bother you, they are very good at keeping flies ect to a minimum.

    Whatever Mal *rollseyes* and if you seriously don't beleive people 'still have that opinion' then you live under a damn rock.
    A pessimist sees the glass as half empty;
    An optimist sees the glass as half full;
    A realist just finishes the damn thing and refills it.

    Aren't daddy long legs actually very poisonous? But their fangs aren't big enough to pierce the vein? Or is that just an urban legend.

    One of my friends put a DLL in her mouth for two bucks. I told her if she'd put a spider in her mouth for two dollars, she was going to get a lot of other 'offers'

    Thanks Hyacinth, I feel heaps better knowing it's harmless.
    I can't reach it to capture it and put it in the garden DA *shudders* at the thought anyway

    Mal, what's up mate? Please don't speak to Anne that way...she's obviously scared of spiders like 90% of Australians...hence why there are so many products available to kill them.

    I won't be killing this guy unless he goes into the kids bedrooms and they freak out and beg me to.
