Time is actually a good idea. I think 2 years might be a bit long though... I could be wrong, but I was under the impression the forum has only been active for around 12 months??

    Huh?

Why would you ask Morgan to close this thread???

It was only posted a couple of hours ago, wasn't it? Still a lot of members to get opinions from, surely?

I think it's a great thread, and some excellent ideas could come out of it, so I'm completely lost as to why you would want to close it???

before you lock it can i say something pleaseeeee *adjusts halo*

Im a member on a parenting forum and we also have "gold memberships" which is where people pay $10 a year to have access to this special section..

I dont post pics of my daughter on normal forums viewed by anyone, but i will post one of two in this areabecause i know it's pretty much the people i have spent so much time being around...

You get automatic access to this "area" after 2 yrs of membership OR so many posts, or of course by paying the $10..

I qualified under the 2 earlier ones, but also paid the $10, because whilst as Anne pointed out, yes it's the admin's own prerogative to host the forum, i have not only met many great people, i've learnt a lot and been able to help others.. it's quite a small forum too (probably about the same as this one in terms of regular members) and i have no qualms about $10 once a year, to help keep the forum ad free, and also to ensure it continues to run (as i would miss it if it was to close down)

As for content, well she runs a couple of competitions in it, she also has an area where some members make signatures for others who don't know how/cant do it. There are the extra threads moreso about personal stuff (as it is family/parenting there are issues that some people aren't so comfortable posting about for everyone to read) and there is also a 'secret user' access where if someone wants advice but doesn't want to be judged they can use this account to make a new post..

We are also able to move our own posts (its a very strict forum about where you post your topics, to keep it running smoothly and not be one big mess) and we also ran a Christmas card exchange (was too late to run a secret Santa) with these "gold" members.. She had to close down the "buy/sell" section for all members due to a lot of new members doing the dodge, but that now runs in the gold section as it's more secure.

yes forums are a dime a dozen, no doubt about it.. But GOOD ones are hard to come by, and i've been through many which weren't worth sticking around for heck some i wouldn't even sign up!... But when you find a good one, it's worth supporting it to keep it running..

And for the record running this forum wouldn't be a tax write off.. there is no form of income coming from it to be classes as a business..

I would defiantly support this, and i think its a great idea..

    Good post, Jodz.

I like the idea of the forum being ad free actually, as these new ads up the top are really pissing me off. They advertise such crap, and all these deliberate designer puppies, and some of the ads even have incorrect spelling which REALLY peeves me off.
    Okay, done whinging...

The way that forum is run sounds like quite a few grand ideas Jodz.

It really is run quite well (i guess thats why i've been there actively for 3 yrs now LOL)

Theres a lot of input from members, and a lot of polls for and against new ideas and it has taken the 'community' to get it to where it is now but it's lovely..

There also seems to be a lot of respect for each other too.. Everyone has difference of opinions but i guess because you are paying to be there, you think twice before hitting the enter key... Sort of like "is that really necessary to say?" Im probably the worst for hitting the key too early, but everyone is use to me now LOL

I didn't say 'tax write off' - which would imply that you would be able to write off the expense (or part of it), I said that it would be considered "income." All income is taxable.

Edited - sorry, I just saw your latter post too. The forum I spoke of earlier is also one that there is no flaming or abuse. In fact, there are only a few forums, this is one, that I am on where flaming and abuse is allowed to occur. I think that may be a key, not the that someone pays to be a member??

Edited again - I'd also like to echo the others and question why the thread should be closed. I think there are some great ideas and points being made on all accounts.

I guess Morgan will make their own decision either way and I think that by everyone discussing the good, bad and ugly about the idea it will help him/her make a decision. Discussion is beneficial.

Sorry bout that Anne! I misread what you said!!

perhaps, but i also think that if you are paying to be somewhere as others are you are more inclined to keep the hostility down? Well I am at least, who knows for other people lol
