I feel terrible, for more reasons than one.

    1) I'm glad it wasn't MY son.
    2) I feel I could have been in a position to stop this ever happening.

I pulled my son from Latrobe High School a year ago for various reasons. One of those reasons was my disgust at how their cross country carnivals were held. I found them expensive as a huge percentage of kids lost their shoes in the mud of the river, and also the safety issue was an accident waiting to happen IMO. The kids were expected to run through the river when it was all mud at the bottom (like quicksand) and if their feet didn't slip out of their shoes when they got stuck, well, they'd fall down into the river as the mud would hold them there, kind of like traction. There were no teachers along the way keeping a scout on these kids, so YES, I had a bloody problem with it. Ended up in a massive stand-off with the principal about this issue as well as other problems I could see happening at this particular school. In the end I brought the education dept. into it, who finally went over the recommendations of the principal and allowed me to place my son in another school. We then sold our property and moved here into Devonport.

If ONLY I had done more!!!

How bloody irresponsible of the school!!! I am freaking out when my son's school go to the beach. He is a terrible swimmer...even at 14. He used to be scared shitless of water and it is still sticking around. He likes the pool, but open waters...nah!

It is DEFINITELY NOT your fault!!! Don't even think that for ONE second!!!

Thanks Cleas. I know it's not my fault. What I'm saying is I wish I had pushed harder about this back then.

You did what you could at the time. There would also be reports of this. If you want to you can remind the education Dept of your complaints back then and that may add some pressure to the school.

Don't beat yourself up about it DA. You did everything you could. At the end of the day you were responsible for your child & took the appropriate action. You can't be the "Den Mother" for everyone else Sweetie.

    Oh, no.
    That is so sad!
    DA,
You did what you could. Most probably a lot more than anyone else.
    Chin up DA!

    DA..

Prayer said by me, such a shame, a life so young taken away. RIP

Please don't feel guilty hun, its not you fault, you did your best in alarming the school & the education Dept to the dangers of the cross country event & it's fully their fault for not taking further action & being more responsible for the kids safety
