Interesting you say about the shaving and thicker hair. My grandmother shaved my aunts hair when she was very young. But didn't do my mothers. My mother has the finest hair I have ever seen, I'm not too far behind.

My mother always says that she wished her mother had of shaved her head too because she says it made a big difference to her sisters.

They didn't do hers because they left it a little late and she didn't want to go to school shaved, whereas they did her sisters when she was a toddler.

Can I ask what is the significance to your culture?? Just interested.

Just on the shaved head. I was so touched. One of Dede's son's mates, one I adore has shaved his head for me. (his mates are early 20s) It was not part of shave for a cure. My niece says she has never met a boy who is so hair obsessed and would have been the last she would ever think of who would do it.. He was as drunk as a loon when we were all out when I was up there and he said he wanted to. I was sent a pic on my phone of him last night. I was even more touched to learn that he did it stone cold sober.

Its common place in the part of the world my husband is from, Afghanistan.
There is some references to it in Islam but we did it so that the hair would be nicer. Surprisingly people from that part of the world are incredibly vain...

Hindu's also have a ceremony regarding it too.

Mine will come back like pubic hair, that lasts about a year. Oh joy, another afro like I had in the 70s, my worst ever hair mistake.

But this time Di you aren't paying for it to be permed! Can't wait to see you with an afro! Mind you, I had one too for a little while!

Oh I so remember my girlfriend having a big 80's perm then bending over her child's cot to pick her up. Child screamed it's head off and dad had to come and pick her up.

After that I gave away the 80's permed look for good.
