wait a bit? Let that bad experience go till you can look objectively at all the good through the years and how they fit with you?

I agree with Di hun... just wait a bit it clearly has shaken you i know the kids are probably pressuring you to get another one asap (at least my little one would be) but you don't want to jump in and buy a breed that seems 'safe' (not actual safe but i hope you know what i mean) and he/she not really be suited to you...

If only you lived in W.A i'd bring Chloe over and she could restore your faith in GSD's for good

    Thank Di and Jodz.

I think you've hit on the key point in your comment about the kids, Jodz, but maybe not in the way you meant...

Yes, the kids would like a dog, but hubby and I are just as keen as them. What I am also taking into consideration is how they feel. It has knocked my eldest around, and he's the one that has certainly been around GSD's in his life. My husband and youngest haven't, and yeah, this episode has basically scared the pants off of them! I am aware that they are not feeling comfortable with getting another GSD, so I guess that's weighing into the equation for me heavily. I have to look at it from all angles, and how everyone feels, not just me. Their friends were petrified (which is understandable) and only yesterday did they start coming back again to play.

So, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the cookie crumbles.

Ok, everyone is probably going to laugh at me but I think everything fits to a standard poodle Honestly!! I can confirm every single point in your list from my own experience except for the catamaran thing... But then, we never had a catamaran....

Ahh, kids. Yes, they have to fit into it greatly.
2 ways here is give them a positive experience with the breed to counteract the negative (visit shelter ones once you have vetted them?) How old are we talking here?
I know my grandson (3) is shit scared of labs now due to the one they had being over boistrous. I wonder though if a puppy too, not an older one can grow with him/her. Making them part of the whole selection process may help IF you decide GSD is the way to go. I am wondering too if ANY breed may have the initial fear factor. It certainly needs careful trading on your part. I wonder if size will be the key here initially, eg pup to older dog.
