Great line up Aussie. If only we knew which beauty was going to win. I always back the greys...are there any in this line up?

Oh yea, that is tomorrow, lol. Hopefully I will have my tech here installing new hardware for my dish and modem. I will watch it if I remember.

Mum, (who used to live next door to my sister) would don her gardening hat, so would De and they would watch the race together with a glass of wine.

Some horse I've never heard of (unless it won the year before) will win. So that probably rules out Viewed (massive extra kg), and Alcopop. However Alcopop has a doggy connection. One of the ladies with a dog that walks at the same oval as me in the mornings - the horse belongs to a cousin of hers (or her hubby's cousin, or something like that).

This worked with Makybe Diva - though I still didn't put money on that one.

Most Melbourne cups pass me by and I wonder what the fuss is about. Have even been known to ring businesses in the middle of the race and wonder why they're so distracted. When I first started working office jobs - we used to take the whole arvo off and have a good time, and then progressively the perks got cut right back to nothing - ie look the result up on the internet later... takes all the fun out of it.

Yeah Viewed is carrying 58kg or something ridiculous like that.
I mean, I know its to fair out the playing field, but isnt the whole point that the best horse wins??

Nope, the Melbourne cup is a "handicap" race. The idea is to give each horse a different weight so they all have an equal chance of winning. Ie extra weight is supposed to slow the faster horse down and give the weight free lighter horse more of a chance. I'm not sure how much research they've done on how many kg slow a horse down. I think, based on my experience of eventing horses, that 20kg doesn't make a lot of differnce but 60kg does. Ie a 80kg rider has a better chance on the same horse than a 120kg rider (assuming skill level the same).

I have a 120kg friend with an enormous horse. He's very gentle and sweet though. But he's not really sure anyone is aboard when I get on (65ishkg). My horse (may he rest in peace) prompty chucked off the 100kg bloke that tried to ride him. I don't know whose bright idea that was, and it went ok until fat bloke decided to ignore what I told him about "no kicking" and kicked the horse - who did a gallop from a standing start and left him on the ground. Happy and very clever horse that one.

Alcopop gets ridden regularily by a non-jockey so should be used to a fairly heavy weight and feel light as a feather with someone tiny on.

    Yeah thats what I said.
Too even out the playing field-make the race 'fair'.
I don't think they should add any extra weight, its meant to be the best horse wins the race.
