Wow, I didn't even know who was in it....

    I 'go for greys' too.

But having said that I'm with AF - I don't bet because

    1. I can't be bothered
    2. I'll lose my money
    3. I don't want to support it (wow, one person out of how many million? lol)

Not necessarily in that order I might add.

I'll just say Thoroughbreds love to race, its what they are bred to do.
My current horse Wiley is a TB, trained and bred to race, but never got on the track. My horse before him Marlie was an off the track TB.
Yes, Thoroughbreds love to race, experianced first hand!

    hi Aussiemyf7

normal horse races, including the long ones (for "stayers"), have their place. The Melbourne cup happens to be a handicap race - which makes the results somewhat unpredicatable - and I think that's a clue to its popularity.

They do a similar handicapping thing with salary caps and the like in the football codes (AFL and Rugby League).

It's so very rarely about the fastest or best winning.

And thats what im saying, I think it should be about the best horse on the track.

Yes, maybe it should be about the fastest/best horse - but then I doubt it would be "the race that stops the Nation" (or at least Melbourne).

I love watching it if I remember to. I have been to a few local functions some years, a great excuse for a get together and some fun.

I KNOW who won the cup in 1984..the only year I do, lol.
I had, that morning, given birth to my son and I WON the maternity ward sweep. I thought Black Night was aptly named. Don't ask me about any other horse ever in it. I wouldn't have a clue.
