Unhappy Has Anyone Ever Lost a Dog to a Snake?

    I have

In January 2007 we moved from Valley Heights (in the Blue Mountains) to Woodford (a bit further up). Our new yard was backing bush and there were creeks etc. We had a 7 yo Jack Russell named Lucy and a 2 yo Husky x Malamute named Elka. Lucy would always be hunting things like lizards and bugs. She even got bitten once but she survived that.

This time, I wasn't home, only my brother and mum were. I was at my bf's and the phone rang and it was my brother saying that the dogs had been bitten by a snake and that Lucy didn't make it I was in such shock I didn't know how to react. My brother said that Lucy was bitten on the neck and the venom spready so quickly she only had time to lay down before she passed Elka was bitten too, on the lip, she lasted a little while but apparently she had struggled a whole lot more before the Vet told us she had passed away.

I never thought life would be the same again. Lucy had been with me through everything, through all the house-moving (we moved 5 times when we had her) and she would always snuggle up to me in bed.

I still get so upset about it, but I think thats mainly because I didn't get a chance to say goodbye

We bought my new pup Axle (cattle dog) just one month after that. I know some people will think that is too soon, but our family are such huge dog lovers, we can't function without them.

We now have 3 wonderful dogs, and thank goodness none of them like hunting for other animals. All they do is eat and sleep which is fine by me.

Has anyone else ever gone through the same thing?

That's sad Sorry for your loss. 2 dogs on the same day is a very hard hit (hugs)

I haven't lost any pets to a snake bite luckily. Mum has bush behind her house and we'd get snakes in our yard and house from time to time...the big brown snakes!

My dad lost his little dog to the dingo bait that gets droped out west qld...that was aweful to watch

    ETA...I just remembered when I was about 5..we had a little ginger kitten...he got bitten by a snake..but I don't remember..I was a bit too young.

I've not had a dog bitten by a snake, but I did lose my second cat ( Russian Blue ) to a snake..

Funnily, my first cat often bought snakes into the house to show them off to use.. He never got bitten

We lost a dog and a cat to snakes in the same year, at the very start of summer. I guess the snakes were sleepy, hungry and grumpy. They didn't want to be messed with...

Our dog Maverick - Belgian Shepherd, was in the rear yard while we were out for the day. We got home and found him dead. He appeared to have dropped where he was bitten - in the face - so I don't think he suffered. Would have been a Tiger Snake, they were endemic around that place - on the edge of a flood plain.

Within a week or two our little cat Clare (Russian Blue as well!) went missing and we found her two weeks later under the driveway (in the drain pipe). She was normally an inside cat and only rarely snuck out for a little while.

Around the same time we found a big, long brown snake skin on the lawn just metres away. He must have been asleep and pre-shedding when she disturbed him.

We had a really old graveyard next door and it was full of Browns. They just were normally happy to stay there. I don't know why it happened just that year, but I hope it never happens again...
