Default This One Time at Melbourne Royal

    (sorry its a long story)

In 1993 friends and I drove (from Syd) to Melbourne to attend the Royal and the Melbourne Kelpie Specialty Show.

We stayed at a caravan park and hired a cabin. Nice lady, been in dogs for years, happy for us to stay there as long as no dogs in the van. No problem, have a nice large 4 birth dog trailer.

I took three dogs and my friend and her husband took three dogs as well.

On the morning of Melbourne Royal (we’d only arrived the evening before) friends husband says he’ll take the dogs for a walk down to the back paddock that the caravan park owner said we could use for exercising the dogs and leave us ladies to get all gussied up for the Royal.

Now let me paint the picture for you...it’s miserable Melbourne weather, raining, windy and has been for a few days. We are in the second last row before the paddock and the campers are the last row before the paddock. It’s sort of low lying ground. We exercised the dogs there when we arrived and it was a bit wet underfoot, but it’s rained all night.

Anyway famous last words my friend says to her husband. Do not wear the clothes your wearing to the Royal, just put on your track pants and shirt you had on yesterday because you're going to get wet.

Anyway as he tells it. Non of the dogs wanted to get out of the trailer in the horrible weather. He can see the paddock from the trailer, you just have to pass a couple of tents and bingo they’d be there, so he runs to the paddock calling all their names the doors on the trailer wide open when out comes one which in turn makes all the others follow. But this was the part he didn’t count on, they did not go past the tents to the paddock, my three headed straight for a small tent that a man was coming out of & when my friends dogs realised that the others had disappeared they too turned around and headed for this tent. (my dogs went camping a lot)

My friend in his scramble to get the dogs fell over several times in the paddock which has taken most of the run off from the caravan park. Apologises profusely to the man at the tent who is stunned and looks into the tent to see 6 Kelpies curled up with the other occupant of the tent sharing her sleeping bag.

Fortunately the dogs were not that wet, after all they didn’t go into the paddock, which is under about 6 inches of water in spots, and fortunately the lady in the sleeping bag thought it was funny. Phew.

Anyway that was all brought under control, the dogs were eventually walked and put back in the trailer, but remember how his wife said to wear his old clothes? Well he did not, he wore his one and only suit. It was now soaked and muddy.

So he went to the Royal in his track pants and his spare collared shirt that was to be worn at the Kelpie show the next day. With a tie too I might add. His wife refused to be seen with him. I couldn’t help laughing at him all day. People gave him strange looks.

    That was the intent.

My SD used to start just about every sentence with "this one time", she got sick of hear her father and I saying "at band camp".
