    Default Barney

I found Barney a year ago while I was exercising Roxie. I ride my bike and she runs beside me, it seems to keep her happy and burns off her endless supply of energy.

Anyway, I was riding along and saw this big black staffy approach. I was really scared at first, thinking he would be aggressive and Roxie freaked out when he tried to sniff her. I had stopped when he first came up, and was telling him to go away. He wouldn't, so I kept riding and he followed. It was a hot day, but I went around the block again thinking he would go home. He kept following, he actually seemed to enjoy it. At this point I just felt bad so I rode home and got him in the backyard, and gave him some water. He had a collar but no tag, no name, no phone number.
I called him Barney. It was a friday night, I'm pretty sure, the vet wasn't open. We decided to just hold him til Monday.
He played with Roxie, and our other dog Ellie.
We took him to my aunty's house and he played with their dog, they actually got along really really well, she is part staffy so they matched each other in force and stamina.
He was so gorgeous. Dad looked up the breed on the net and got the 'specifications' for a purebred. Barney matched them all. He was so gentle, Dad even let him in the house.
We took him to the vet on the Monday but they wouldn't tell us who owned him, or take his number and get the people to call him. It was stupid, we only wanted to let them know where we found him, when, what we'd fed him etc. I'm not sure we would tell them that we went on a road trip with him though :P

Barney wasn't the first dog to 'find' us - I think Roxie has put out a beacon for strays 'Come here, the humans will help you! We actually had one dog break through our fly wire door and come in. They're all desperate to live here!!

When you find a dog, you're supposed to phone your council and they come and get it and find the owners.

What if the dog had been stolen and dumped? There might be someone who loves and misses that dog out there. What have you done to find the right owners for that dog?

It is my reading of the post that he is with them. It has been a year now. Do agree much more could have been done to hopefully find an owner who could possibly be grief stricken at loosing their dog.

26 years ago I found a very shivery, shaky, timid young pup curled up on a friends doorstep. I canvassed the immediate vicinity but was very pleased I did not find the owner.
Blackie was with me 18 years (BC X) and you could never ever have a broom in his presence without him running for his life. He may have been pure, no idea.

I hope if this ever happens again the OP now knows what moves should be made other than just contact a vet.

Oh LOL. I am so silly sometimes, It seems I've left out a crucial part to the story!
Barney was microchipped so the vet took him.
Devils Advocate, we do only have Roxie, but at the time we found Barney we actually had another dog, Ellie, a chihuahua x foxy. She passed away from cancer about 3 weeks ago.

Roxie is completely desexed, as was Ellie and my Aunties dog. I would never ever have a dog that wasn't, and Barney had been neutered also.

Yes, a dog broke through our front door. It was night, my Mum had just gotten home from work and my dad was in the garage. We had Ellie and Roxie at this time, both in my room, they heard the door go and ran,(I thought it was my mum coming in) then all hell broke loose and there was yelping and barking. I was in my room and ran out, there were no lights on so it was pitch black, then realised there was this huge german shep terrorising our dogs. She was harmless, she could have killed both of them in one snap. My parents ran in at this stage and we cornered the dog into the laundry, collared it and tied it up out the front, then took it to the vet the next day.

Once Roxie figured out the gap was in the door she used to run in and out of it, then when it was actually fixed my aunties dog, who was used to the hole, ran through it and broke it again so we had to put bars across the bottom. My mum wasn't too happy about that, my Dad custom made that door to go with the 'motif' of the house LOL.

So yes, I know what proper action to take when we find a dog, or one finds us. I'd rather take them to the local vet first, the only pound near us is a fair bit away, the vet would know first if the dog was reported missing and they have the facilities to find a microchip and contact the owner.

We only had Barney for those days because the vet was shut and, quite frankly, he was adorable.

    Very good.

Can I just say, reading this, has put a smile on my face. This just shows how sweet and welcoming you are.

I don't really have anything to say but ah well, thought I would just let you know how sweet this was to read.
