I wonder why they pretend to care if they don't? I mean, what is the gain to them?

Thats so easy to answer DGP. It is embarassing to surrender your dog. Just ask any shelter what lengths some people go to to make up stories about the dog the "found" on the side of the road. Pathetic really

Ugh. At least they're not so embarrassed that they just leave the poor animal to die.

May I ask, if someone surrenders a dog for a clearly bs reason, is there anyway to make sure they don't just go buy a 'fresh' pup? (I assume it's different for real reasons, like going over seas, death of elderly care taker etc)

Good question. But you would be surprised just how many people surrender their dog and then proceed to walk the rows of dogs available for adoption. Some people have no idea No way to stop them at this point in time except that the staff in the shelters see this over and over again deal with it accordingly.....which is to decline their application.

Disney, if ever one day you are involved with rescue (and I have a sneaking suspicion you will be lol) you will hear all sorts of reasons, all sorts of sob stories from people.

They say they got a new pup so don't want the old one anymore.
They are renting and the landlord found out and wants it gone.
It weed on the carpet when they got it home (yes they returned it the next day).
It is wrecking the garden, the verandah (no they don't walk it, no time).
Didn't realise it needed to be clipped every 8 weeks and can't afford it.
The list goes on and on...

The one that takes the cake is a poodle that was surrendered to the RSPCA because they had redecorated and it didn't match the new colour scheme! I had heard the story but didn't believe it until I happened to meet the staff member that the poor dog was handed over to - she confirmed it.

When I first got involved with rescue, I was constantly flabbergasted at what I saw and heard, now it takes a lot to phase me - I still get angry, but it's wasted energy and I just concentrate on the animal and how I can help it.

What a wonderful job you have done for Gomez and the photos show that so well. Good for you and I hope that eventually a good home will be found for him.
Disney, you will know when you are ready and it may be sooner than you think.
The more people I meet, the more I like my dogs.
