Default A Decade of Love (Happy Birthday Dodge)

(Read this if you want, otherwise skip to the end, there are pics at the bottom)

I remember when Oscar (the first dog I knew, but not the first in our family) passed away… That was a very sad time for us all. He passed not long after Christmas. Soon after that, near the end of January, knowing we’d recently lost our beloved dog, a friend of ours who has working Kelpies mentioned to us that he has pups that will be ready for their new homes soon.

My parents were tossing up between another Border Collie or a German Shepherd when our friend offered us a Kelpie. After a long think, the advantages of a Kelpie seemed to outweigh both the BC and GSD for our lifestyle (Still a potential working dog if we ever needed it, less hair to maintain than a BC, and less health problems than a GSD). So when the pups were 6 weeks old, my parents and I went to meet the pups.

Even though I was young at the time, I still clearly remember that it was a big litter of pups… I’d say at least 8! And every single one of them was black and tan… except for 1…

As soon as my Mum laid eyes on that tiny, scruffy, grey coloured runt, she knew which pup she wanted! The pup had a skin condition at the time and the bloke just wanted her gone. He thought she’d be a useless working dog and because of her skin he thought no one would want her…. so when we showed interest, he told us to just take her for free. My parents insisted that she is worth something, but the bloke would accept no more than $50.

So a couple of weeks later, we came home with our little blue runt of the litter… which I have to say was probably the best decision we’ve made!

As Dodge and I grew up together, we spent countless hours after school wrestling in the paddocks, playing basketball together, among many other things! I did one of my school projects on her when she was around 2.

Although I don’t play games with her now days, like I used to, every now and again I’ll get the basket ball out and her eyes will light up with excitement. Its like she just becomes a puppy again, its a beautiful sight!

Compared to most of the dogs I see that are her age, she is doing extremely well. Being a Kelpie is probably one reason for that, she still has loads of energy… but its the little things you notice.

She spends more time sleeping and less time out on the farm, she’s a little slower now days (still just as agile though!). She seems like half the time she’d just rather snuggle on my lap than go for a walk or play a game… this is something she’s only been interested in, in the last year or two… Most of her life, she has had almost no interest in cuddles from me! My Dad said to me the other day that he thinks Dodge is looking old in her eyes…

Its hard to believe that it has been 10 years… How lucky I am to have such a precious, loyal, playful, happy, and beautiful girl in my life for 10 years… hopefully there will be many more years to come.

Happy Birthday Dodge, I don’t know what I’d do without you! I don’t think there is a day that goes by where you don’t make me smile and laugh.

Happy birthday Dodge, May there be many ,many more.

Shes a beautiful girl and looks looks a far cry at 10 from the sickly pup you took home.
