Thanks Bernie. Comments above were actually just in fun. My daughter is a chip off both myself and wife combined. SHe has an ideal attitude towards dogs and dog training and has 3 of her own ( 4 until last week when her oldest sadly lost his fight for life).

Nothing like keeping it in the family.

"Wow" I hear. "They have 8 dogs and want another". Well , whats one more when you already have 8?

Mum and bubs are doing well. Little boy was under average weight at birth but is suckling and growing. This is mums first litter and doing very well. Will not leave the welping box unless we pick her up and carry her outside.

Not sure of colour at this stage other than it,s not black or blue merle. They started out looking like lumps of chocolate but are starting to lighten up already.

Will do more photos at 1 week.

Things change so fast. Pups were fine. Wife gave the little guy some formula and went to check half an hour later and the little boy had got trapped behind mom and was not strong enough to work his way around and back to the heat pad and succumbed to the cold. He was not squashed, just on the wrong side of mom after, I guess, mom turned around.

We are guessing that because he was under weight there may have been other health factors that contributed to this sad outcome. He had not regurgitated the milk formula and chocked because we checked his mouth and there was no sign of any fluid there.

So I have a question. Do you think it is a good idea, or even possible to find a "foster" litter and try and see if mom will accept another pup or two. We would like to avoid the issues common with a single pup if we can.

Anybody have any suggestions where we might find such a thing as a foster litter.

Oh Nev Allen - I was very sorry to read this ! The joys and the not so joyous moments when breeding pups.

My suggestions regarding finding other pups for your singleton - would be looking to other breeders of shelties - maybe try the other forum; contacting AWL and/or RSPCA. I know that AWL has a few pups at present.

But in your situation - will it really be a problem ? As you said - you have 8 others - and they would definitely be good teachers when the pup is mobile ! Heaps of human contact and make it not so easy for pup to get to the 'milk bar'. Putting extra towels or even egg cartons under the blanket - makes the pup work a bit harder to get to mum.

    Heaps of good luck !
