Default Hello from cold wet Toowoomba

Hi, I'm Vanessa and have just joined this forum. I have two beautiful senior dogs, Loki who is a 15 year old boxer X, and Denzel who is a 10 year old chihuahua. I stumbled across this forum a few days ago when searching for information. My sweet little chi took a tumble down the stairs early this week and was rushed off to the vet. An x-ray showed nothing broken, however it did show that he has severe arthritis in his hip. Oddly enough he is very active, and has no noticable symptoms at all. So hence I have been searching for information on anything and everything that may help as he gets older to ensure he stays healthy and active as long as possible.

    Anyway, thanks for reading.

    Vanessa

Hi Vanessa - welcome. Sorry to hear about your little one taking a fall, and his arthritis. I've heard good things about glucosamine for arthritis, but if he isn't showing symptoms, maybe that's not necessary. What did your vet say?

ETA: it's cold and wet in Brissie too!

Hi Vanessa, welcome to the forum. I found glucosamine great for my old kelpies. Then I found out that it's good for humans too and started taking it myself. I'm 51 and have had arthritis in my knee for years. Glucosamine has worked wonders for me. See what your vet thinks.

Hi and welcome to the forum vrh88.

As others have said glucosamine is very good and also omega-3 via fish or supplements is also helpful.

    Good Luck !

Thanks everyone for the welcome and the advice. The vet started Denzel on Metacam and has recommended Sasha's Blend for both of them, so have done that. Have some read some positive and some negative feedback on it though, and have been browsing to see if there is anything else that may help as well. Im off to Petbarn today so will look for Glucosamine, and have been giving them cod liver oil for a while.

I have however invested in a baby gate to block off the stairs so he cant get upstairs when Im not home, so hopefully no more tumbles.

    Hi Vanessa

I'm in Toowoomba too- isn't it freezing today! My mum gives glucosamine to her dog and she is doing great on it, a lot better than she was before I'm pretty sure she just uses human glucosamine tablets too (sometimes pet tablets are the same as human and so much more expensive!)

Hi Kristy, it has been awfully cold here today. I did wonder if there was any difference between human and canine glucosamine, will definitely be giving it a try. Thanks!

Welcome Vanessa. Beautiful pups in your signature...........Sorry your little one took a tumbleI think the glucosamine and fish oil is a great idea, but would have no idea how much such a little dog should have

Little dogs do not show the symptoms as much as big dogs..They have weight in their favour
