    Default Hi from SA

    Hey everyone!

I'm Sarah, I live in South Australia with my husband, two cats, two guinea pigs and a cockatiel. We are planning on getting a puppy before the end of the year, (probably October) so I thought here would be a good place to start planning and get advice.

We are originally from Dublin, Ireland. We moved here almost 3 years ago. In Ireland we were living in my mums house where there were two family dogs, Tess (maltese cross) and Chico (Jack russell cross???) I loved them dearly, but as they were my mums dogs, I could not bring them with me when I moved.

We got Tess as a puppy, so I have some ideas of whats involved in living with a puppy, but, to be honest, Chico did a lot of her training for us - particularly with toilet training.

I am studying at the moment, doing 4 days a week 9am - 3pm. When I finish studying, I will be working mainly from home, so I have lots of time to dedicate to a dog. The main reason we are waiting a few months before we buy is so we can both take some holiday time for the first 2 weeks when we bring puppy home so that we can work on socialization, and also so we can save for things like desexing and puppy classes.

I guess 6 months is probably a long time to be planning getting a puppy, but I want to make sure we do everything right.

Hi Sarah! to the forum! I don't think it is ever to early to start looking! Now would be a great time to start working out what breed is best for you and contacting prospective breeders (if you are buying from a breeder) to see when there next litters are coming up!

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.

This is a post I made for someone else who wanted to know about where to get a puppy...

Definitely avoid petshops and "breeders" who won't let you meet the puppy parents.

    Do consider rescue puppies.
PetRescue - find your new best friend!
you can adjust that one to choose puppies and either sex and anywhere in the country - and if you want a specific breed mix (they don't like to encourage that because of unfounded breed prejudices but you can do a google site search.

    Thanks guys!

I think I am going to go for a full breed - I have considered looking at cross breeds, the various types of "oodles" and "doodles" that are forever for sale on Gumtree, but after reading an article the puppy discussion part of the forum, I've changed my mind! lol.

Anyway - I'll make a separate post for some help with my choice. Thanks for the welcome!
