    Default Howdy from South Australia

    Howdy,

My name is Boyd & I live in South Australia. I am new to this site but hopefully will be able to utilise alot of valuable information & insight into our little friends. I have been working at Council for approximately five years and am currently working in the works department, but am begining to branch into the Compliance Department where i can deal with Dogs, which is what i love.
After much reading into it (about a year) i have decided i will be getting myself (& fiance) a Siberian Husky puppy for my birthday. Would love to hear from people who have raised a Husky or Malamute & any tips they may have.

Thanks enough about me though, if anyone wants to chat feel free to add me on Facebook (click the 'Boyd Kench' in my signature).

    Thanks,
    Boyd

Hi Boyd and welcome. "Clare, South Australia" what an awesome name for a town!
Owning a dog should be a partnership. Much like a good marriage it should be based on love, trust and devotion until death do you part.

    Gday Boyd.Welcome to the forum!
Cant wait to see some pictures of your new pup when it arrives. I think are a few husky owners lurking here somewhere.

    Welcome Boyd

I just wrote a great long post on how to choose a responsible breeder. Find the husky club and go meet some.

Can I ask why a husky? I'd be worried about coat catching burrs and stuff and the dog being too hot - though the thick coat also insulates them from excessive heat - better than some of short coated dogs.

The only real problem I know about them is that some of them have crap recall. I'm sure it's possible to train them to come back but like some breeds (eg Beagles) - it doesn't come naturally to them. I was at the beach with two on Sunday - and one had to stay on lead because of recall - and the one that supposedly does come when called - nicked off up into the sandunes and out to the nearest road - where it decided to stop and wait for its human (phew). No idea why it did that.

Have you also considered a Lappy (Finnish Lapphund) - there's a few of those in SA now and they're a little bit more people friendly than huskies.

There is a Sibe and Malamute club - but none of the websites I found seem to be working at the moment including the dogs sa one which is scary.

    Links for responsible breeders
Avoid buying from internet classifieds or pet shops. Home of very dodgy puppies with high risk of poor social and health. Responsible breeders - with the ANKC or not - do these things.

You want in writing that your puppy's breeder will take the dog back if you can't keep it for whatever reason. Most responsible puppy breeders want the best for their puppies, they have waiting lists of would be buyers, and they would much prefer you give the dog back than dump it at the pound.

These links should help you with info to make a good choice.

And this is a database of genetic problems you want to avoid - by breed. So you'd be looking to see evidence that both parents are clear of the main problems associated with your breed choice.

Hi Boyd, welcome to the forum. Siberian huskies and Malamutes are just gorgeous. A few years ago, I had a husky, he was just beautiful. Unfortunately he had to be surrendered as my marriage broke up and I had nowhere to take him. It was so hard to do. Anyhoo they are very strong minded but I have seen huskies at the beach where we take Oskar, and they are off the leash and quite well behaved. We also were living in Cairns when I had my husky pup. I did research before we purchased him, and it is recommended not to shave the fur in summer as it acts as insulation. Good luck in your endeavours finding a pup and make sure you take heaps of photos. They are just beautiful pooches.....oh and they have quite a high prey drive, so if you have other small pets, teach the pup from a young age the difference between snacks and fellow pet lol or just keep them away :-)

Thanks everyone, being a "dog catcher" in training I have thoroughly studied a lot of breeds. Huskies have always appealed to me for some reason. A few friends have them and they are great. There is no where local that a dog could be safely unleashed other than the backyard. Yes I would only purchase from an approved breeder, which pedigree have on their site.

Does the "SIBERIAN HUSKY & ALASKAN MALAMUTE CLUB OF SA" have a site or contact details? I did a quick google search on my phone but no luck
