    Default Introducing Zoe.......

    Hey all

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. My fiance and I have recently adopted a female staffy stray from RSPCA. She is roughly 2 years old with lots of puppy in her still. We got her this past Sunday and its been a week from hell getting her settled.

It does not seem she has ever had anyone invest anytime into her at all and she is very naughty. I am hoping to change this with a lot of love, affection and some training. if anyone can suggest a place in or around Vermont South that I could take her and myself for obedience classes that would be appreciated!

Sure I will be actively reading the forum as time goes by.......

    Regards
    Jonathan

P.S. Need to add I am new to the world of dog ownership and will as much advice as anyone is willing to share!

    where is Vermont South?

this is a good place to start for training tips and problem solving

Susan Garrett has written a book called "ruff love" especially aimed at people with new puppies or rescue dogs in their home.

You may also want to do some of the stuff on the NILIF (Nothing In Life is Free) system for your dog to make it pay more attention to you ie all good things come from you so I the dog will work for you instead of ignoring you and doing my own thing.

No matter how hard it is, never scold your dog for going to toilet inside - she will only learn to hide. But do try the umbilical cord ie having her on a lead and going outside lots so she only has the opportunity to go where you want her to.

Good on you for getting a dog from the RSPCA. Hope she brings you lots of joy (eventually).

    Hey All

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I am sure it will come in handy.

She most definitely a sweetheart and as everyday goes by she is settling in a little more. I have got her walking really well on the leash and slowly trying to teach her the 'sit' command.

Just so you know, Vermont South is in Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

    Thanks again!

This is a list of dog clubs afflilated with Dogs Victoria aka Victorian Canine Association or VCA.

Is Vermont South near Malvern (Vic) or further out?

This one is called "Eastern Suburbs"...
Eastern Suburbs Obedience Dog Club Inc. Melbourne, Victoria

However if you don't like their style - there are others you can try. Each club can be quite different in how they teach / train.

I'd look for ones that are phasing out choke chains especially on puppies and allow training (for pets at least) with front attach harness or haltis. And focus on positive re-inforcement (treats and praise and games) and not so much harsh punishment (verbal or physical).
