Default How do your dogs train you?

I just took Nero down to our local lake for a good swim. When I don't have much time for a walk I like taking Nero there and throw his ball for half an hour and let him go for a swim, which he so loves.

I threw his ball a little on the grassy bit to warm him up before chasing him into the freezing cold water, although this isn't so much fun apparently. After a while I realised that he had started to gently guiding me towards the water by not dropping the ball at my feet but at a a meter or two distance – edging his way towards the water.

When he felt he had me follow him he wouldn't drop the ball anymore at all but carry it in his mouth while slowly walking towards the water. Very slowly... so someone as pathetic as me on my two feet can follow He would frequently check with a quick look over the shoulder that I still follow him. When we reached the spot where he usually jumps in he invited me to throw his ball by dropping it at my feet, sitting down and wagging his tail.

How could resist such a look?

    Aww, how cute!

My ex's old dog years ago used to lead me home or to the car when we were out in the bush and I got lost (which happened more and more often because I just stopped paying attention when I had the dog with me). She would run ahead - always following the most direct way back - and then stop at each bend or fork to look over her shoulder to make sure I was following her. Used to give me the warm fuzzies, and it was much, much better than a GPS!

Banjo will train me by letting me know when she deserves treats. Like when there's a stranger walking past us in the past and she doesn't even attempt to jump on him, but instead she'll come to me and look as if to say: "Did you see that? I could've been a real nuisance then, but I know what to do. So now feed me!" I usually oblige because I think it is totally awesome that she demonstrates that she knows what is expected of her without my input.

    Gawd

Never mind me. My dog gets perfect strangers to give her belly rubs, and treats... all the time.

But we have two way communicaton. I think it's good if she can let me know what she wants and I often reward that.

Can't resist a tug toy in the mouth and those eyes that just shout "PLAYTIME".

I'm currently studying (and procrastinating) for a very important uni exam tomorrow, my dogs keep running down the stairs to the garage where my car is, then running back to the top and giving me the 'puppy dog eyes' then running back down the stairs, I think they want to go to the park... At least they're getting exercise from going up and down the stairs!

Rex wakes me up 6.30am pretty much on the dot. He licks me excessively & when i open my eyes he jumps on & off the bed as if to say 'walkies, walkies, walkies' - finishing work at 2am, this isn't much fun for me but i will stumble with my eyes shut to find my trackies & shoes (i don't even bother with my hair) & take them for their walk around the block, then i get back & we all crash out on the couch lol.

With Molly i will only wear clothing with pockets. This is to hide my hands! If i have my hands out she will come over and paw and them, nudge them with her head, lick them. It's a pain in the arse and i find it's easier just to sit on the couch, or lie in bed stroking her - so i'm giving her exactly what she wants...
