    Default What to feed?

    Hi Everyone

Just wanting your opinions on what the best dry dog foods are. My two girls (Lab cross and Cattle dog cross) are both 18 months old and are currently on dry science diet for breakfast (it was what they were fed when I got them and what the vets recommend and I've never really got around to changing it) and then a fresh lamb, kangaroo, chicken, brown rice mix that I make myself for their dinner. As I start work at 2:30am feeding dry food for breakfast is much easier than wet food because I'm usually still half asleep and can just chuck it in their bowls before I leave.

Anyway, I was having a look at the ingredients of science diet the other day and must say I'm definitely not impressed. I have been researching NUTRO dog food this morning and am wanting everyones opinions on that? And any other dry foods you recommend.

    Thank you!

I think Nutro is great, I like Nutrience and Royal Canin too. Some people have found Artemis too rich.

Why not just a home made diet? Make up a big batch and just dish it out of the fridge. I get a big low sided tub with a lid and it's in the fridge made up for the week 10kg at a time. Dr Bruces Vets All Natural - Natural Pet Products, Healthy Pets - Home

Thanks I think I might go buy some Nutro and try it out The local feed store has it on special at the moment which is a bonus! I make up big batches of their dinners and leave them in the fridge but because I leave for work so early in the morning and I'm half asleep and have to be as quiet as possible so I don't wake my partner up it's just much easier to give them some dry food for breakfast If only males weren't so forgetful and hopeless then I could get my partner to feed before he leaves for work haha!

    I feed my dog phuds
    Phud's Natural Dog Food
It works out (with the chicken mince I buy) to cost me about 55 cents per day to feed my boy (21kg, high energy dog).

But if you want a reasonably priced natural dry food, I'd also recommend Black Hawk. I haven't tried Nutro, so I may have to look into it. I've been recommended Eagle Pack by other trainers, but it is SOOO expensive.

My neice is a vet nurse and says Hills science is a well marketed bag of rubbish . Many vets around here only carry Hills and reccomend it as they get very nice kickbacks from the company.

She suggests Nutro and blackhawk and I like raw as you are already feeding. If your time poor chicken necks are good also and Barf is like a healthy takeaway as well .There nothing wrong with giving dry in the morning, and wow 2.30 starts? It that was me mine would be lucky to get anything at all and I think a little dry with the raw is good as it gives them some extra nutrients raw dosent have, throw a few eggs every week as well but everyone will have there own thoughts on food, and all just as good as the other.

I always assumed that science diet was recommended just so the vets could make money selling it but then I couldn't believe just how terrible it was until I read the ingredients! I chuck a few chicken necks into their food a few times a week and they love them but I find too many and it really clogs them up. I just went and bought some Nutro so will see how that goes

Nutro is great... Only my little fuss pots didn't like it!

I ended up settling on a "cheaper" brand and adding raw, at least I know they won't turn their nose up at it.
