Thread: Microchipping and Rottweiler breeder in VIC

Default Microchipping and Rottweiler breeder in VIC

I have been on the forum for a few weeks now and i have enjoyed how helpful and informative people are.

I have a questions regarding the purchase of my pup. I live in Sydney and purchased a Rottweiler from a breeder in Victoria. I did so purely on trust and i know people will say i ran the risk, i really did think he was genuine and the website looked genuine. I asked for the pic of the litter and he said it would be reserved. The pup was sent I paid $2000 for the pup with a view to keep it as a family pet and possibly stud one day. The pup came with a vaccination certificate but no microchip. I did not know this until i went to the vet for the pup's second shot. I then decided to microcbhip according to state law. When i got home i read though some paper work from the breeder and it states all his dogs came with microchipping. I sent the breeeder and an email and was given a flimsy excuse about how it has only been law in Victoria in the last month or so.

Can anyone tell me whether this is true? If it is not true what would be reasoning for my pup not to have a microchip? In saying that was the entire litter sold without microchipping or just mine? I know i should be asking the breeder this but via email he was quite blunt and said if i was not happy he would take the pup back. I find this quite unreasonable because i have already spent quite a bit of money on my pup and have grown attached to my pup.

I really love my pup but am starting to worry i did not get the pick of the litter as the vet told me yesterday that it was on the small side for a Rottweiler. I know size is not everything but when you pay $2k for a pup you do expect something. This may be making me sound superficial but it really is not about that but more about principal. I am not naming names on here as far as the breeder goes but i would love some opinions.

get the pup microchip but all expenses must be paid by the breeder, the documents you received, are they proper pedigree papers approved by ANKC?
$2k is average for a pedigreed dog.

I am not familiar with the laws but I found this - Microchipping FAQs - Department of Primary Industries

    hope it helps!!!!!!

Q: I have heard that Pet Shops, pounds/shelters and commercial breeders now have to microchip cats and dogs before sale?
A: Yes, as of 1 December 2005 all Domestic Animal Businesses (pet shops, pounds, shelters and commercial breeders) must microchip cats and dogs prior to sale. A commercial breeder is one required under the Domestic Animals Act to be registered as a Domestic Animal Business, in general this is a breeder with 10 or more breeding female cats or dogs.
How did you go about selecting him as a breeder?

I personally think that you should be naming and shaming on here. This breeder does not sound legit to me. By law, they must be microchipped prior to being sold. If it not done, he should pay for it.

If you can tell us the name, we can check out if he's registered etc.

I know many breeders that refuse to sell to interstate clients, simply because they can't sonproper background checks and home visits to make sure their pups are going to a safe and secure home.

If I were you, I'd read your paperwork and then if he said it would come microchipped then send him the bill.

If this guy is a backyard or puppy farm breeder, I would hate for anyone else to have to deal with him for the next litter.

I'm sure your pup is beautiful either way and will be a great addition to the family. Pics please!!

    Thanks for the info.

Jadielee i did some surfing online and came across the breeders website. I was looking for a puppy and i think i may have rushed in to it a little which was silly on my part. I freely admit to that.

The pedigree papers have not yet arrived as he required the microchip number apparently. The pup is now 4 months old. Apparently there was a backlog on Victoria during Christmas as far as the pedigree papers go. I am hoping to have the papers within the next couple of weeks. Again im not in Victoria so i do not know this to be true or false.

Thinking back now i wish i had stumbled upon this forum much earlier. I feel quite stupid at the moment.

No need to feel stupid, I've never brought from a breeder (both of mine were BYB before I had known all of this as well) so I wouldn't have any idea either on what to look for in selecting one.

I only know I would find one around my area by going to shows and talking to other people and contact them early etc (all stuff I learned from here lol)

Just make sure all of the correct paperwork comes through. I don't know if there is like a register or something with breeders details that you can check to make sure they are legit?! Might be worth looking into that too. I would be very angry if I had spent 2k on a puppy and it wasn't what I expected as well.

    Home Page: Welcome to DogsVictoria

You might want to ring these guys up or the rottweiler club of victoria (find on the dogs vic site)

I couldn't find microchip in the dogs vic regulations. But if it is mandatory in Victoria - they should be able to tell you, and I doubt that this could be a breeder registered with them, so the only papers you'd be getting is something he makes up on his own computer.

If you paid by credit card - you could write the credit card company and say you didn't get what you paid for eg an ANKC papered dog, and ask for your money back.

For now i wont name and shame. His website does look quite legitimate and i take all of your points as they are quite valid and make sense. What would be the reasoning for a pup to be sold without a microchip? What is the timeline normally for papers to arrive?

I am giving him a chance to do the right thing.10-9DC5A381-1363349-800.jpg
