I don't think it's VCA rules about microchipping anymore - though they've probably had them a while, it's more like Vic State Government Law. Flouting that is another story.

Ie with all this problem of dangerous dogs, they are being more strict about dog ID.

Ie basically the rotti man is not allowed to sell you a puppy that is not microchipped - as best I can tell.

Microchipping FAQs - Department of Primary Industries
Q: Do all cats and dogs now have to be microchipped?
A: Yes, microchipping is now compulsory for all cats or dogs which are being registered with a council for the first time and councils also have the power to require compulsory microchipping of all cats and dogs housed. Check with your local council to see if microchipping is compulsory for all cats and dogs. Additionally cats and dogs sold or given away from any Domestic Animal Business (Pet Shop, Commercial Breeder or a pound or shelter) must be microchipped from 1 December 2005.

Microchip Details now needed in Cat/Dog Sale Advertisements - Department of Primary Industries

Permanent Identification of Cats, Dogs and Horses - Department of Primary Industries

Legislation for the Welfare and Management of Domestic Animals - Department of Primary Industries
    The act (law) says
That councils are not allowed to register a dog (or cat) unless it has been microchipped (or has a note from the vet to say it can't be and some other acceptable permanent id has been used).

And you have to register your dog with the local council "where the animal is kept". I don't know what that means for tourists eg grey nomads and homeless people.

Regulations - see part 3 for microchip stuff. I'm having trouble figuring out what it means. I hate vic laws.

Newfsie yeah i am hoping he is a late bloomer. I love the little guy but it does irk me that after chatting to the breeder he told me that is was going to be massive and like a show dog bla bla. As i said its not about being superficial its about getting what you paid for. I dont think it is great when im at a coffee shop where that picture was taken and i get asked if its a pure breed.
As i said you love your pets regardless but when you pay 2k you kind of expect to get what you pay for.
Does it happen often that some dogs are a bit slower and then shoot up later on?

what lines does he come from and which breeder? You can PM me if you like. Not all dogs need to be huge puppies in order to be large adults, but rottweilers should not be 'massive' anyway. You paid a lot for a dog I assume you did want to show him?

You had me thinking "suss", when you said you got pick of the litter, very unusual for a breeder to part with pick of the litter to an unknown after all the risk and hardwork they've gone thru.

Mandatory microchipping before leaving the breeder I think came into affect in Feb 2012. Mandatory before registering with council is different. Most breeders fall into two camps, the I microchip at the first vax regardless of what the law is, or, I hate putting little puppies thru microchipping so young and I'll only be too glad to tell puppy purchasers of that. (yes they now have to change their thoughts). My vet gives a local before giving microchips to 7 week old pups.

Paperwork is slow unless you pay for express processing.

Does the website brag of any wins? Have you seen the medicals of parents yet? Have you looked for any profiles on DOL of the parents or other dogs they own. Most serious show breeders will have profiles up. Not all breeders are a member of their breed clubs or advertise thru Dogs Vic etc. Some breed clubs don't offer much to their members or like to stay out of the clique, and advertising with Dogs Vic often only reaches those people that are already aware of you.

Just realised he's 4 months old and still no paperwork, that's too long. At what age did you get him?

Ok absolutely gorgeous puppy, but does not look pure to me. I have a friend with a 3 month old rottie pup at the moment (same age approximately as my dobe x ridgeback) and I know his is papered and pure because he shows the father and it would probably be double the size of your little cutie.

The overall accumulation of dodginess by this breeder - is why I'd be talking to Dogs Vic for info before I'd talk to him. You can ask him but if he's been a bit loose with the truth so far, why would he suddenly start being straight with you if you confront him on it.

If Nehkbet is a member of dogs vic, Nehkbet can check the litters registered against your breeder's name if you send a PM with the details - click on the user id and "Private Message" option should appear down the left side.

It has been illegal to sell a pup in Victoria without a microchip for at least 12 months. Can I ask if your pup comes with a health guarantee and a money back or replacement guarantee? Is your breeder a code of ethics breeder?
