    Default Is Rogue a Pitbull?

    Hi everyone
I have my mates dog over for a sleepover and was curious to know what breed you guys think she is.
Her Dad got her from one of the local rescue organisations as a 8 week old pup who was classified as a staffy x and they said there is a chance she is a pitty.
Her Dad seems to think she is as she has the pink nose and the big head and I tend to agree with him but as I am no expert I thought I would ask those in the know for confirmation.
    Thanks in advance

Owning a dog should be a partnership. Much like a good marriage it should be based on love, trust and devotion until death do you part.

I'm no good at this game, but I think she could be staffy x pitty? I can see the staffy in the shape of her head. I think pitties usually have a squarer skull? I am probably totally off the mark here.

Could be either amstaff or pitty imo ... there is also the chance she is neither lol.

My guess would be amstaff or pitty cross(the shape of her head doesn't look quite right for a pure bred but that of course is very much guesswork - could also just be the angle the photo has been taken on). Personally i don't think anyone will be able to tell you that she is definately an amstaff or definately pitty, they are so closely related that imo they are virtually the same breed

I would have to agree with Beloz, she has a Staffy's boof head but her colouring definitely looks to be from a Pit (using my sisters Pit Bull as a reference haha).

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.

I'd wat or Choppa's opinion, but would hazard a guess that yes, she is. Or atleast close enough to be labelled one without hesitation.

Because Pits are not bred to a standard the is variety in type. The red nose/dilute is typical of some pitbull bloodlines, and the staffordshire and amstaff breeds doesn't carry it, although it could turn up as a fault in amstaffs but would be rare.

If you have a look at the photos in this thread, which is the dogs in need currently in Canberra pound, you will see some lovely, lovely pits (check out "Bella"!) and you will see the difference between them, and also the similarities with Rogue.

For that dog to be properly called a pitbull - you'd need to be able to trace its parentage back to registered pitbulls in the USA. And given it was a rescue - extremely unlikely.

The breeding of "pitbulls" in Australia has been completely unregulated for years - since they became a banned import with Federal Customs and and excluded from the ANKC register. So anyone who has a dog that looks vaguely like a pitbull or meets the breed standard defintion (USA) for a pitbull - could claim their dog was one. But it could easily have any mutt or pig dog or staffy or whatever in its ancestry.

However - I would not take that dog to Victoria at the moment because they have a purely visual definiton for a pitbull.
Restricted Breed Dogs - Department of Primary Industries
this is the link to their visual definition
Standard for Restricted Breed Dogs - Department of Primary Industries
it's based on the american pitbull terrier show dog standard.

Unfortunately they've also included any cross of their visual standard - so any dog at all can be declared a pitbull and seized in victoria unless it was registered and housed appropriately before Sept 29th in victoria. So any visiting dog would potentially be in trouble and any look a like and any dog the ranger took a dislike to also in trouble and if you let them take the dog - (personally I'd do a runner with it) - your only appeal route is the VCAT and it would take many dog lifetimes for them to get around to hearing the case.

Visual ids of pitbulls are a load of crap really but Vic still implemented this stupid law.

Personally - if anyone asks - that dog is a staffordshire bull terrier x labrador (cos a lot of yellow labs have the same red coloured nose).

People with red nose pits frequently try to register them as a Ridgeback cross as the red colouring is also in that breed.

I don't know what the law is in WA, but in NSW and Vic at least, it won't matter what you say it is or register a dog as. If a ranger spots it and decides it's a Pit, it's up to the owner to prove otherwise, have it pts (in Vic) or live with it as per conditions of a restricted breed in NSW.

A dark coloured or parti colour pitbull has a better chance of being less conspicuous, or easily called a stafford cross or an amstaff as so many people are a bit hazy on what a pitbull really looks like. But a red nose is a commonly accepted pitbull trait and can be targetted.

And Labs can have snow nose, or partial pigment loss, usually seasonal. Few knowledgable people will accept that a red nose is a snow nose as they look very different. That usually includes rangers.

To be honest, I dont think she looks like a pitty much at all IMO (the colouring can come from other breeds) and while she might have some pitty in her, she may not either.

But she does look like a pitbull type.

ETA: She does have staffy eyes IMO....all the x breed staffies I have owned (and my mums pures) have all ad eyes kind alike that

Her dad has actually just moved to Vic with his new gf and so Rogue lives with his Mum. I take her from time to time so Gypsy gets company and Rogue gets a good run. I know he wants to fly her over but also knows it's too risky at the moment.
