If I had not come to dog forums when I took on a pregnant bitch I would have advertised free to good homes if I had to find homes for them and I couldn't locally.
It is the "normal" thing to do for the uneducated and uninformed masses. I would have been one of them.

Any posts made under the name of Di_dee1 one can be used by anyone as I do not give a rats.

If you really want to the best thing you can do is reply with a short speil...

    ie:

"Hi, just a friendly comment in relation to your Free to good home dog. I was posting to urge you to consider putting a small price on your dog and be careful to screen homes correctly. Unfortunately people still take dogs for the wrong reason for such things as puppy farms (if the dog is not desexed) or for bait dogs (to train dogs to fight and kill other dogs). I hope you find your dog the perfect new home."

    Or something along those lines.

When my mum was looking for a new dog she went through classified ads, pound etc. Both her dogs were acquired through advertisments in the newspaper, Benji had a $150.00 price tag, Rex was a free to a good home. She got some awesome dogs this way, so i don't have a bad perception about getting dogs this way such as, they must have something wrong with them because they are giving them away free, some people genuinely want good homes for their pets and don't want to make profit from it, i most probably would have done the same before joining this site. Now that i have been "educated" lol i know better than to not put a price tag on my animals heads if i needed to find new homes for them. Not that i ever would, i would totally go out of my way to keep them with me

Just before Christmas...a Staffy called Jensen was given free to a good home via GumTree. He was found some days later...dead from what very much looked like fighting wounds. He was more than likely used as bait dog in a dog fighting ring...RIP Jensen

of course there are some awful "free pet" stories, but there are also some good ones.

My first dog (all by myself) was a freebie when I was 17 and she was fantastic, and had a fab life until she got cancer at 12.

I live in a small country town but noticed in our local paper there was an add saying "WTB puppies, any breed, will take whole litters" couldn't help but think the worst There has been a huge problem with dogs of certain breeds being stolen from yards for these fighting rings too. So sad.
