    Thumbs up Petition

Hello all, a petition has been established calling for assistance from the RSPCA in regard to desexing cats/dogs, with the end result being that we see a reduction in the number of cats/dogs being killed throughout Australia every day. Could you please get behind this initiative and sign and share the petition. We need all the support we can get.

rspca-desex now - Sign the Petition

    thanks so much

signed and shared!! I have a question, does anyone know why they don't desex? Is it a money saving thing, OR a money making thing (do they want undesexed dogs available to make them more enticing to buyers , kind of like the government controlling tobacco sales!!) I would be interested to hear opinon or fact on this.

They do desex dogs they rehome. The state branches don't all have subsidising desexing programs, offering low cost or assisted desexing.

The petition is a bit general. ACT RSPCA do have one. But it has to be funded, vet clinics cost to run. Having assets doesn't always translate into having vets and clinics available, equipped and paid for. A person may own their own home, but without ready cash might struggle to buy weekly groceries...

I checked the cost of getting a dog desexed at the RSPCA for a friend/acquaintance once (in Canberra). Turned out their pensioner rate was still more expensive than the cheap vet nearby (who is actually quite good). She was on a pension and ended up not having the dog desexed. (And seemed quite proud when she saw him mount the non-desexed bitch of a friend once, sigh) He has now been adopted by close friends of mine who have booked him in for the snip this month.

It is the combination of not being really aware of the consequences and responsibilities of owning an entire dog - possibly a result of a low level of education - and being at the low end of the economic ladder that is the danger here. And $10 off the vet fee really isn't going to make the difference. A lot more money needs to be invested to tackle this issue. It's probably a bit unrealistic to expect the RSPCA to fund it all, the government should play a part too. But the RSPCA does take the biggest cut out of donations towards animal welfare and I do think it would be a very worthwhile way to spend them.
