    Default my dog park rant

last night i took jonah to the dog park near my place, and as usual he was playing with other dogs, big and small when what looked to be a ridgeback x came up and started being really aggresive to all the dogs..... there was no owner in sight so i decided to leave before things become ugly.

he had already had a minor scrap with another dog and tried to hump the crap outta him..... then he saw jonah as an easy target and began to haras him while he was on the lead.... so basically i got jonah to run in circles around me as i waled to the gate...... anyway, the dog got hold of J, tossed him around a bit then pinned him down and again humped the hell outta him...... i pulled the dog off j and walked outta the gate when the RB came charging at us and went through the gate......

anyway i put j in the car and pushed this dog off and went home........ i was so pissed off that someone firsdtly left their dog at the park unattended, and secondly a dog that clearly has no social skills was allowed to roam and attack other dogs.... i took j home and made sure he was ok, he seemed fine and went back to the park to look for this dog/owner but by then he must have either got out or been picked up.....

any ideas on what i can do in the future when i see this dog and owner? i was so temped to go looking for the owner but where would i start?

    cheers........ rant over......for now

Get the number of your local Ranger and program it into your phone.

If you see the dog again, check to see if it has council tags, if it does take down the number and then call the Ranger, if it doesn't call the Ranger and describe the dog to him/her and explain that it has been there more than once now and that you feel it is harassing your dog (and others) and that it is not under proper control. The laws of a dog park say that any dog needs to be under voice control at all times and must not worry, harass or attack a person or animal. In most Councils a dog just harassing another can be declared dangerous these days.

This is the reason I mostly avoid dog parks and the reason I advice ALL of my puppy owners in puppy classes to not go to them, and certainly not until the pup is over 7/8 months old, and even then to go outside of peak hours when there are no more than a couple dogs in there, and to watch how the other dogs are interacting before walking in.

Here is a great article on Dog Parks, everyone who goes to a dog park should read it.

It makes me so grateful for our dog park. Which is really big (over 1km long) and people walk from one end to the other and back. Plus there are 3 parallel paths you can take. So dogs usually meet one on one (or at least one 'family' at a time). And if the meeting isn't successful, they just move on. Also, we have quite a lot of off leash areas in Canberra, so there is no great need to take your dog to a busy dog park. We do have some fenced off parks and my experience is that they are mostly frequented by owners who don't trust their dogs off leash in an unfenced area. And thus I stay well clear of them.

I do wonder what the story was with this ridgeback x. Surely no one would just leave their dog at a dog park and leave?! So maybe he was roaming by himself.

When you register your dog with the local council you will be issued a tag to put on your dogs collar with a number on it. Have you registered Jonah? Whatever the council sent you as a ID for your dogs council rego, other dogs should have them too.

I agree with K&P - ring your local animal management control center, and give the description of the dog & what area, and the Rego number if you can get it. I wouldn't go as far to say don't go to the park anymore, I've found dog parks to be great in rehabilitating Rex with his dog aggression issues and it gives him and Molly a chance to have a rest from each other. We have two chosen parks with some wonderful people and dog's alike, although if i see a dog, or dogs there that we have had problems with in the past, i don't let my dogs in and take them somewhere else.

I would say yes so that members of the public can identify a wandering dog or a dog that harrasses them etc.

What council area are you in?

That is because in NSW you register your dog with the State and it is a lifetime registration. Where as in QLD we pay year to year fees with our local council.

Did you get a certificate or registration?
