    Default Schutzhund

Probably will cop some flak for this but i have been looking into this sport for a long time, been down to events etc etc and have decided i am going to do it. I would enter my 2 GSDs but i fancy getting a pup and training it up myself, something i didnt do with my 2 GSDs (i had help). I have the space and time to do it as well as still having enough time for my GSDs and WSSD. I am looking at a Belgian Malinos but have heard they bark and whinge all the time, even if they are a confident dog etc. Does anyone know if this is true as quite a few people have said this to me?

My old boss does Schutzhund work with his Mal.

He was imported from working lines and if he's anything to go by then yep they bark a lot. He always has to be kept busy and often if they had people over he would be removed to the kennels so that they could hear themselves think.

While down in the kennels all the staff couldn't wait until he went back up to the house.

Absolutely lovely dog, highly trained, fun, a real handful, only for the highly dedicated.

I think the barking a lot depends on how you manage your dog.

All I know about Mals is they are a very demanding dog and they're a strong dog, so like a powerful border collie. Ie not very good at the off switch but it can be trained too. If you know what you're doing.

If you're full on into dog sports, dog training and learning everything you can about it, it would be great to have a smart williing dog. If you just want a garden ornament that will discourage burglars - this is not the right dog.

i just dont want my dogs taken away due to whinging neighbours, i'd love to add a Mal to the pack but i would hate for it to be taken away as it barks all the time, even a well trained Mal seems to want to bark all the time so i cant see how to stop it!

Oh he loved to bark, loved to bark at their other dogs to rev them up and play with them.

Barked as he watched the other dogs being worked etc.

He didn't belong to the average owner either.

I can't really say he was discouraged not to bark, he lived on the premises of a boarding and training facility so it wasn't a priority.

But I'm being honest with you when I say he loved to bark.

He is about the only Mal I know well.

Maybe have a chat with your neighbours first. If they're out all day, they're not going to care unless the dog is barking all night.
