Thread: Dangerous Dog Amnisty Ends

    Default Dangerous Dog Amnisty Ends

Well the day is going to be upon us tomorrow.
This will now give council rangers the power to take ytour dog if unregistated with the council.
You have no power to stop them if you are in this boat.
It doesn't matter if you are totally with it or against it. Just know that it starts as of tomorrow.
Just to rub salt into the wounds here they put a man on tele that had his Poodle killed by a Staffie on Tuesday.
Yes this was a media beat up but did I really feel for him.
I don't know how I would have handled it myself.

So if your dog is deemed dangerous and you have failed to have it registraed then there is only one person to blame and this is you.
I would like to know the numbers of dogs put down from this time last year to now. Then I would like to know the numbers of the same period for next year. It will be interesting to know if number do actually go up.

Well as of tomorow innocent dogs can and will be labeled Pitbull ,seized and PTS. There will be avenues of some form of appeal process but its all a bit late after they've taken your dog.

Without papers or a vet cert in your hand than your dog is at risk.

Even worse is it really comes down to "do you have the pockets to fight a council in court?". The answer to that for the vast majority of people is NO. Maybe we need to look at finding a solicitor who loves dogs who would be willing to challenge this legislation - if we could find someone, there would be multiple ways to provoke a court case, just need someone who has the necessary knowledge and funding behind them to follow it through???

They've got a statewide standard up on their website.

Pit Bull Terrier Registration - Department of Primary Industries

Of course it is a subjective beauty contest.

I've been having discussions with someone from the dpi/dse and he says not to bring my dog to Victoria if it is a mixed breed that can be mistaken for a staffy.

The only way out currently is to have an ANKC affiliated pedigree or a letter from your vet saying your dog is a "particular" breed. I could probalby get my vet to say its an ACD x and not a pitbull x but we'd be taking complete stabs in the dark about the x bit.

I'm thinking maybe my vet will write the letter based on a dna test result, but I read that the AVA have asked their vets to have nothing to do with the BSL or writing letters to avoid it. So not sure.

I sure as hell don't want to go through what Tango or Lennox's owners are going through when their SBT were misidentified and locked up by council rangers.

Spent years in doggy prison while the owners battle to get their dogs back. Lennox in the UK is a dogs as therapy dog and still is locked up.

I'm just hoping some Victorian lawyer or politician loses their dog and has to challenge the legislation.

And it's not nice knowing we've learned nothing from human racial discrimination.

I came across a lobby group once that also acted on dog owner's behalf in court in certain cases. I can only remember two of the things they were involved in, which was allowing dogs on public transport and unfair body corporate decisions regarding keeping dogs. They did more than that of course, but it was years ago and I can't remember.

It sounded like a great idea and I contacted them to ask if they would also lobby for changes to the tenancy act to make it easier for people with dogs to rent. But the person who managed the group had financial and medical issues and had to quite.

If I had any legal background, I would love to start something like that. And of course it would include representing people who want to fight unfair decisions in relation to BSL.

Sad day for dog owners in Vic. I am dreading the stories of innocent family pets being PTS.

I reckon the bold bit is a worry. She has been mistaken for a staffy cross though I do my best to talk people out of it. It's the shape of the top of her head between the ears and the half prick ears that do it. But English pointers and dalmations have the exact same shape head, and loads of kelpies and bc have the half prick ears.

So I'm not going to risk bringing her to any bit of victoria frequented by city council rangers. I'd trust the rural ones to get her id right, plus the rural places I go, they don't - too close to the SA border.

We know all about uneducated, isn't that what BSL is based on, the amount of people that think Zeke is a "pitbull" is scary, considering he is a papered Bull Terrier, a friend has been freaking about the legislation and she has a Lab x boxer but it fits the bill of a "pitbull" according to rangers, dog is now on holidays across the border until she can get proof of what her dog is. I feel very sorry for those that can't support their claims, it's a sad time for all involved.
