Default Is It Time to Euthanase??

    Hello

We have a 13 year old small breed dog who for the past few weeks has gone steadily down hill. He has a number of medical conditions none of which can be cured- even if we considered it based on his age. He is now sleeping all day and awake all night as well as being in some pain. Is having him euthanased the best decision - or do we continue to keep him on pain killers from the vet and let nature take its course?

    thanks
    Simone

I'm very sorry to hear your dog is so ill.

Somehow I sense that you might have answered your own question just by asking it. But only you can know when it's time to let him rest in peace.

Wishing you lots of strength in this difficult time.

If you can no longer handle seeing him in pain or his quality of life is very poor, that's when I would do it.

Agree with pugger. You have to be strong for them during their time of need, because they can't tell you how or where it hurts. Sometimes you just know when it's time.

I tell this story at times when needed.
I had an old BCx whom I adored.
I selfishly held on for far too long. He suffered longer because of me and my love.

I told my mother this story when her dog started to go downhill. Mum rang me one day and said I remember what you told me and I felt he was starting to suffer and I did not want to lose him but he was PTS in my arms by a vet in my back yard this afternoon.

She thanked me as she felt that she too would have waited too long.

I am not saying the time is now for you. Only you would know that.

I don't want others living with the hindsight and regrets that I have.

I am in the same as what others have said. If you can he is in constant pain then i would be taking him to the vets. And I to think you have answered the question.
The vet will not tell you to do it cause it isn't their job to do that side of it.

Just look into his eye and if the light is on but no one is home then I would do it.
Just don't let him suffer and let him go with some sort of dignaty as we did with our last one.

I am so sorry for you and the dog and it is a hard time for you. But this is the penalty that we pay to have something great in out places for those few years yet burn a big hole in our hearts.

You have to think of the dog and not how you are going to feel because he is gone.
    Sorry abotu it all.

Thank you all so much for your kind words -I never thought we would end up in this position and now we are it feels just awful :-( But as most of you have pointed out we are at a point where I think we need to be kind to him after the years he has given us and we see the signs that his little body is giving out and hes not comfortable. We have an appointment with the vet this afternoon and now feel more at ease with our decision. Thank you again Simone
