If we don't temp test for potential triggers, then how do we know how severe the issue is, what needs correcting or even PTS?

Mind you, so many variables with no uniformed types of temp tests.

Even each unique style will also vary depending on the individual animal's history, mood, tolerances, coping mechanisms etc. Much like each individual assessor's opinion on the day may vary.

I don't know why the results of the temperament test for a dog without a known issue would be less reliable than for a dog that has a known issue really.

But I think mandatory puppy classes would be a more reliable way to ensure dogs are properly socialised from the start.

Puppy classes have to be a part of ownership now.
It was not around when we had Lacey and she was one that could have benifited from them. As she was don't get in my face type of dog.
But even in that you will still find pups that don't like being around other dogs.
The answer is, we have to judge every dog/pup as a total individual and not as a Heeler, Shepard/ Mastiff or Jack Russel. No 2 dogs are the same and they should never be pidgeon holed like that.
Yep means more work but it will have to be done.

Failure might be dependent on of the variables like other dogs on the day of the test, car backfires etc. What do you do with the fails? PTS? Isn't the idea of basic obedience classes more about training the owners? And sorting out the nuffies who "can't be bothered"?
I met a Golden Retriever once who had been professionally trained and he performed beautifully for me.His owner was stunned and said to me "why does he do all that for you and he never listens to me?" When I suggested that she needed training she was incredulous.
I used to puppy walk for the Kamarn Breeders Society who were selectively breeding German Sheppards for the forces to fix temperament and conformation problems that had been introduced and promoted by the show set. (1970's and 80's) One of the Kamarn bitches had been put to a dog who had a suspect temperament. All of the pups had temperament issues and I channeled my dogs issues into fetching. Others who did nothing ended up having their pup put down (fear biters were a common problem in this litter) My dog failed a phsyc test and did not become a forces dog but was allowed to live out his days (please play fetch with me) with me because of the dog my training turned him into and negated the fear biting issue with him.
