Thread: How or Why You Named Your Dog That

Default How or Why You Named Your Dog That

I have been asked how I came up with the name of Murphy.
Some thought that it was due to an Irish background, which I am not, not even a little bit.
Some thought it was down to a AFL player, and it is a no to this one also.
I have had people think that it was down to someone famous.
But it is no to all of these questions.

Murphy got the name that he now wears fulltime only because I like the name.
And once I seen him, I knew right there that he was going to be named Murphy. All because I liked the name.

I had a name picked out for the Bullmastiff that we were (well I was thinking of getting but not the boss, she never wanted one) going to get.
I had this name ready to go and it would have suited a Bullmastiff but a Cattle dog I don't think so.
This name was Bones, to me it really suits a larger breed more than any other breed.
So now it is over to everyone else to let us know how you came uo with your dogs name.

    I will just list 3

The Choppa Dog got his because as a puppy he was so darned cute and with his colour reminded us of the lolly pops lol

His daughter was officialy named CJ ( Choppa Jr) but got the Loppster or Loppy from the minute she was born lol

Tonka got that because he ws so Tonka Tuff to come through what he did when he was first brought to our attention

I've always liked the name Murphy just as an aside, used to have a horse called Murphy ( Murphy's Law)

I'm not all that happy with our new dog's name, Banjo. I thought of some much better names. But my 6yo daughter rejected them all! And I wanted her to have a say because we got this dog together - it's not just 'my dog' like the one I had had from before she was born.

It also had to be a name that rolled off the tongue and didn't resemble any of the common commands we would teach her.

When I had to name my old dog, I didn't have any inspiration. And because I brought her home from the RSPCA the day I met her (couldn't do that these days - which is a good thing!), I didn't have much time to think.

So I looked outside, saw it was a full moon and named her Luna. Which actually really suited her. But later I did meet two families with a human girl named Luna.

I wanted to call our current dog Stella - to keep the theme going - but my daughter was adamant that it could not be a name that was used for any human we know, and one of the human Lunas we know has a sister called Stella!

I like the name Murphy. My daughter would've immediately pointed out that that is the name of the boy across the road from us though.

Well my first dog Keira was supposed to be Kiara but somehow I stuffed it up and made it Keira LOL, but it suits her now.

Phoenix got her name because I had recently gotten a tattoo in Latin saying "And out of the Ashes, the Phoenix shall rise"
So it was between Phoenix and another name which I can't remember but Phoenix obviously was the winner.

When we finally found out we were getting a bulldog pup I was adament I wanted a Girl. OH was also adament he wanted a boy! Yay 4 Girls arrived safely WooHoo!!

Because we were getting a bulldog I wanted a sweet name. I didnt want a tough butchy name that usually comes with all the Bull breeds! Even the females!!

It was a choice out of layla and Ruby and we actually wanted the pup that the owners picked which would have been called Layla. Layla just didnt suit the pup we were given so we chose Ruby! Rubylisious is her name but Ruby for short

Batty was originally called Rocky. Rocky lasted 3 days.

Batty came from Batty the Bat from Fern Gully - the ears did it.... Then he was just mental, smart as a tack but completely insane, so Batty it was.

    Thanks Chop.

I got it a couple months after my 4 year relationship ended. It really represented how I felt at the time that instead of letting the end of the relationship pull me down that it was a new beginning and that I had come out of it a better person probably pretty significant for you right now as well. I guess Phoenix (my dog) was also a part of that process of making me a better, new person. So her name is very representive of what she is to me as well. She also helped open my eyes up to the plight of Pitbulls around the world and to the wonderful dogs they are. I will never be without a Pittie now. Phoenix was definitely a new beginning for me.
