    It is a particular type......

The first official standard for the American Bulldog was co-authored for the National Kennel Club by Alan Scott and J.D Johnson in July of 1970. It was written to describe the American Bulldog as it existed at that time, in form and function. I believe that the American Bulldog described in this standard has since diverged into two separate breeds - the American Bulldog and the J.D. Johnson Bulldog.
Even a cursory examination of the successive breed standards endorsed by J.D. Johnson since 1970 will show how his vision of a dog "large enough to throw a saddle over" has evolved into what is now officially recognised as the J.D. Johnson Bulldog.

The difference I put it down to is the strong, wider jaw and the bigger chest. Oh and the price tag haha
